Overall quality this year was higher by default since there were actually 2 blocks this year :mjlol: but nothing hit the highs that Ibushi/Ishii, Kenny/Ishii, and Ibushi/Tanahashi hit last year. Looking back now knowing where everything went and where they're going, some weird shyt pops up in my mind:

Archer kicking out of Kamagoya. Obviously, even with his impressive run, Archer isn't getting any kind of serious run up the card, and him kicking out puts him above Tanahashi (the man the move was made for/named after), while also putting him on the same level as Okada and Jay White, and Jay White kicking out was diminished by two guys (one being a US title challenger at most) kicking out of it in the tournament. I get Okada kicking out of it, but really it probably should have been saved for White kicking out in the finals, or better yet not until Okada/Ibushi at the Dome. Actually Archer had the LOWEST POINTS TOTAL OF ANYONE lmao.

Ospreay going over Tanahashi decisively kind of took away from Ibushi finally beating him, to some degree in my mind. With the junior champion murdering Tana, I feel like it officially puts Tanahashi in the NJPW Dads stable and makes Ibushi's win over him seem less important and impressive. Also makes me think who the fukk could possibly be a legit challenger to Ospreay the rest of the year considering he's going over GOAT-tier heavyweights in the G1. Then again, Ospreay started off the year not only decisively beating Ibushi, but also putting him on the shelf for 3 months. Midas swell have whoever wins the Super J Cup take the title off Ospreay and move him to heavyweight officially like Shingo.

Jon Moxley starting off so hot and coming off like a superstar and then by the end he was goofy ass Dean Ambrose doing stupid shyt, acting like an idiot, and having no energy or passion left. It seemed like he was a surefire killer and top guy immediately, but by the end of the G1 it was pretty clear he was just around to swap the US title before AEW TV starts. Losing his last 4 after such a strong start and seeming completely wore out, even the crowd reaction on the finals was fairly indifferent after it seemed like he was the biggest star around the first few matches.

Jay White's comeback run mostly because it didn't feel like a comeback at all, it just felt like "oh really this is the bullshyt we're getting?" :beli: and everyone groaning that Gedo's new toy gets put into another position no one wants him in. Moxley completely collapsing and Naito being booked like the new Goto was more key in White getting to the finals than White himself. People just do not react to anything he does except when it's Bullet Club bullshyt interference, the reactions are :camby:because people were sick of that in 2013. His role in the finals match could have been anyone in that spot, and that's how I feel in literally every match he's in. I also think trolling the fans is the cheapest, worst kind of way to get heel heat and is especially ill-fitting in the sport focused NJPW.

Why have Sanada finally get his big win over Okada when he was going to be such a middle of the back "these guys don't matter" point total? Felt like a real waste of an opportunity for him to headline a show with Okada, finally end his losing streak against him...just to be tied with 13 other people :shaq2:It's not even like Sanada was in contention to maybe win his block or anything. It should have been saved for a year where he was going to win the G1 or go to the finals.

I'm not convinced that Jay White doesn't win the briefcase and end up in the main event of WK anyway:shaq2:
Agree with all of the above, and the Moxley thing goes for KENTA as well. At least with him you could argue that his losing streak lead to his decision to join BC, but he was on a hot run, then lost so much in a row he became completely irrelevant in the outcome of the block.

Gedo's reliance on lose/win streaks this year was pretty bad altogether, when even a guy like ZSJ, who had the G1 built around him not being in his zone and losing a lot, ends up at 8 points like everybody else after a win streak, just makes everyone look weak. Fale winning three matches in a row with wrestling moves leading to the same thing is just idiotic, especially because with everyone but Okada/Ibushi out, Gedo could've uplifted anyone in the final round (special note to SANADA) instead of throwing the entire roster together at 8 points.

SANADA being booked so wishy washy is mind boggling to me. You build his G1 run on getting that singles win over Okada finally... and that's it? This is a wrestler who you put in two main events earlier this year (Finals NJ Cup and Wrestling Dontaku) and you can't bother to book him stronger than 60% of the other G1 competitors? Hell, he still didn't even manage to beat EVIL, basically stating that he hasn't gone up in the LIJ rankings either.

The fact that SANADA basically has earned another championship opportunity without any indication that Gedo has any intention to make him into a top guy (regardless of whether people feel he's on that level) basically spells disaster for another Okada match, since he'll lose once more, therefore ending his singles matches against Okada this year at 1-3, completely nullifying the impact of that one win he had in the G1.

While we're talking about Jay White, what does Gedo see in him that he doesn't see in Toa or Juice? All three went through the Dojo and speak perfect English.

Sidenote: Would TSC be behind 2013 Okada coming back and winning the belt on his first try?

Not sure what you mean by this :jbhmm:

For what it's worth, people weren't really behind Okada winning the belt as quickly as he did in 2012 - mainly because his return match at the Dome was mediocre as fukk - but dude took 2 months in convincing everyone he was the rightful heir to Tana as the next Ace.

In 2013 Okada did win the belt back and had a lengthy title run, which was basically his first "Ace run" with the title.

The internet was on fire when Okada won the belt. People thought Gedo had lost his mind like Inoki and was gonna ruin the company. Okada looked godawful at the Dome and was boo'd when he challenged the Tana. That Jay White X-Pac heat. Even the Rainmaker looked terrible. He was out of shape. His haircut was bad etc. An entirely different human being showed up at New Beginning and had a fantastic match. Even then people thought it was just moreso a Tana blessing. But then Okada/Naito was maybe the most important match in wrestling in the 2010's.

So yeah it took like 2-3 months of Okada knocking shyt out of the park before his hype train started. By the G1 that year everyone knew he was an all-timer in the making and gave Anderson his career match to date in the finals. White and Okada had basically the same opportunities but one person hit homerun after homerun while the other struck out for a year and a half but now has a couple of base hits to his name.

I saw New Beginning and hopped on his stan train. After the Naito match you couldn't tell me nothing dude was gonna be the GOAT.

Yeah that Naito match was really significant in a bunch of ways. When Gedo still wasn't lazy :mjcry:

I got my years wrong, I meant 2012 when he came back from excursion. I'm fairly new but from what I perceive, Gedo either pushes guys to the moon once they graduate from the Dojo or they become complete afterthoughts like Toa and Yoshi-Hashi.

So Ibushi will face Okada on the first night of WK.....

Then if Ibushi wins the title, he wants to face the IC champ Naito on the second night.

So the two title ting might actually happen :leon:

This is Monkey Paw Wish shyt for everyone who wanted Naito to win the G1
