When you guys interview at startups how do you decide if they're sustainable? I have a phone interview with one next week. Crunchbase says they're total funding is only $24 million. They're 5 years old with 100 employees (according to LinkedIn). I'm going for an IT position and according to the job description, the position reports to the VP of people and culture.
All signs are telling me to take the next exit with my current job. Layoffs are going around, my role isn't defined, if I switch teams within the company I'll be moving backwards, the compensation is insulting, and it doesn't feel like I'm valued. It's a shame because I don't want to do all this job hopping that's "normal" in the tech industry. Ideally I could have given them a good 20, 30 years which is standard at this company, when you get talking to people around here. Management makes it really hard to not leave...
So it's time to get back in the game for real
If you're looking for "position" security, being a government job is your best bet. Benefits, retirement options and depending on the role/branch, training is ample and the process for promotion is laid out clearly. All signs are telling me to take the next exit with my current job. Move to government if you want stability, but in the modern landscape that just isnt the norm anymore unless you are in banking or huge industries like auto.
I'm not tripping on job security for myself honestly. We just have the potential to lose some people with a lot of knowledge and I really don't want to be one of the people filling the gaps, especially with the relatively low salary they're giving me. Plus if I lose the guys I work closely with then I damn sure don't want to stay.If you're looking for "position" security, being a government job is your best bet. If you want "skill" security, then look at being a small business government contractor or a contractor in general. It's a process, and you'll be responsible for all your admin/hr, benefits, retirement, etc, but you get to present yourself based on knowledge, skill and experience and it's also more generic and could lead to other roles.
Dope that you are investing! You might want to diversify your holdings as well outside of your company. Don't want to get burned if something scandalous happens with your company like what happened to all of those Enron employees.Been purchasing stock in my company for about two years now. If I’m going to dedicate a good portion of my adult work life to this place, might as well own a piece of it.
