Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano Rematch: Weigh-In Results From Los Angeles

BY KEITH IDEC
Published Fri May 13, 2022, 04:54 PM EDT
LOS ANGELES – A day after they were kept separated on the same stage after their press conference, Brian Castano and Jermell Charlo came face to face after they made weight Friday afternoon.

Charlo, draped in an American flag, smiled and shook his head up and down. Castano stood stone-faced before they eventually turned toward photographers in front of the stage.

Their supporters made plenty of noise in a ballroom at The Westin Los Angeles Airport, before the 154-pound champions were interviewed for Showtime’s stream and eventually went their separate ways.

Minutes earlier, Buenos Aires’ Castano stepped on the California State Athletic Commission’s scale at 153¾ pounds. Houston’s Charlo officially weighed one pound lighter, 152¾ pounds, more than a pound below the contracted limit for their second 154-pound title unification fight.

They’ll fight again Saturday night for Castano’s WBO belt and Charlo’s IBF, WBA and WBC championships in the main event of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader at nearby Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Caesars Sportsbook has listed Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) as more than a 2-1 favorite over Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs).

Castano, 32, and Charlo, 31, fought to a controversial split draw last July 17 at AT&T Center in San Antonio. Both boxers demanded an immediate rematch following their closely contested 12-round fight.

Barring another draw or a no-contest, the Castano-Charlo winner will become just the seventh fully unified champion in any division during boxing’s four-belt era. The six fighters who’ve accomplished that feat are middleweights Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor, junior welterweights Terence Crawford and Josh Taylor, cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk and super middleweight Canelo Alvarez.

Showtime

9 p.m. ET; 6 p.m. PT

Jaron Ennis (28-0, 26 KOs, 1 NC), Philadelphia, 146½ pounds vs. Custio Clayton (19-0-1, 12 KOs), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, 146½ pounds, 12 rounds, IBF welterweight elimination match.

Kevin Gonzalez (24-0-1, 13 KOs), Culiacan, Mexico, 121 pounds vs. Emanuel Rivera (19-2, 12 KOs), Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, 121¾ pounds, 10 rounds, junior featherweights.

Been doing my homework on Custio Clayton. Dude is incredibly slow to start and just likes to move in a circle on his back foot and work counters. Moves forward and has KO success the most when you're near the ropes.

Everyone I've seen him against is flatfooted and I was TRYING to find something with a Black American. Boots Ennis is FAR more skilled than him in circular motions/backfooting and he tends to use it in an offensive manner. What's worse, his reach is dwarfing Clayton's. It's an interesting match stylistically but Boots could get him outta there quick by divin on his ass out the gate and disrupting whatever's gonna make him conclude to move in circles off his backfoot/counter. Plus, Boots reach is dwarfin brehs. Them counters won't be near as effective as they've been in previous fights.

I'm thinking rounds 4-5 on this one

Am I the only one who feels like Showtime underpromoted this fight? They could've done some shoulder programming for this. Even a one episode All-Access wouldn't have hurt

Yeah esp with all the shyt that popped off between these 2..tank and rolly got the treatment though smh

your stars are but dust on my shoes
I will be looking to see if Charlo attacks the body early. Castaño's guard leaves his midsection open, and Charlo had a lot of success late with the hooks to the body.

Mix that strong jab and right hook downstairs, Castaño will not survive. Sets up the KO upstairs.

Think this is gonna be like Floyd maidana 2. The better boxer will set themselves apart. Jermell looks hungrier than ever. As long as he doesn’t get careless and leave himself open too much he should get a late stoppage. Just can’t let castano lure him into those wild ass exchanges against the ropes. Patience will prevail in the end.

That's cause no one has MADE IT past 6 rounds with Boots :mjlol: the kid really needs a challenge. It's a damn shame. If Clayton can give him that challenge then I'm happy but ehhh... :patrice:

The only thing with Charlo that made me raise an eyebrow was the fact he weighed in at 152. Either dude put in crazy work in training OR he might have over trained....that's his lowest weight in 12 years

Over trained was my exact thoughts yesterday too bro. He might've left something in the gym & peaked too soon. I hope I'm wrong. I hope they show or mention the rehydrate weights because if he doesn't put on much come fight night....
