Jermell Charlo has taken a different approach to preparing for his rematch with Brian Castano than he took while training for their first fight.
Charlo trained hard for their initial 154-pound title unification fight, which resulted in a 12-round split draw July 17 at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The IBF/WBA/WBC champion knew that he could push himself more, though, and needed to eliminate potential pitfalls to get into the type of mental and physical shape to ensure that he becomes boxing’s seventh undisputed champion of the sport’s four-belt era when he and Argentina’s Castano clash again May 14 in Carson, California.
Houston’s Charlo discussed the changes he made for this training camp during an extensive interview that was conducted recently with a group of reporters and videographers.
“I think the last fight I just dealt with a lotta like, you know, those what you consider them to be like the [rigors] of camp, when you go through things and you don’t explain, you don’t express it,” Charlo said. “Like a lot of those things was bothering me during that time. Like I was having back spasms and sh*t, and realizing like, ‘Hey, you gotta take this sh*t a little bit different. You gotta try to change it up a little bit.’ I wanna say that I came in this [rematch] doing it the old school way right now. You know, at first I was just being superstar Jermell Charlo. And I put that sh*t beside me right now.”
Charlo, who will turn 32 on May 19, indicated he got sidetracked thinking about trappings of fame he once believed were important. The two-time WBC super welterweight champion feels he is back to training with the ferocity he did earlier in his career.
“This is like about me digging deeper into the Jermell Charlo that I really am,” Charlo said, “and tryin’ to test myself into deeper waters with everything, with training and swimming and just running and just everything. You know, stuff that I kinda like, you know, like I said, I went away from because, you know, you start to grow into like that stardom world. You know, I put that sh*t beside me. All the partners that I had around me, got rid of ‘em, stopped hanging, you know, just everything. Taking sleep more [seriously] and being [considerate] to that. Stuff like that, you know, just little small things.”
Caesars Sportsbook lists Charlo as less than a 2-1 favorite to conquer Castano in their 12-round rematch. Their second fight will headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader May 14 from Dignity Health Sports Park.
If their rematch doesn’t end in another draw or a no-contest, Buenos Aires’ Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs) or Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) will join middleweights Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor, junior welterweights Terence Crawford and Josh Taylor, cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk and super middleweight Canelo Alvarez as the only boxers who’ve become undisputed champions since the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO have all been recognized within the boxing world.
