Usually couples who might be a bit older have issues conceiving from either the woman's part in that something might be wrong with the way her eggs are releasing ( or not releasing with low ovarian reserve) and whether or not the man's healthy sperm count is high enough or not. Older sperm also tends to swim slower which makes it hard to reach the egg. Worst case both have some kind of issue and most people won't find out if something's wrong until they're actually trying to conceive.
If it does reach the egg the risk of the baby having a low birth weight, longer stays in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), autism, schizophrenia, bipolar etc increases quite a bit. And finding out what exactly the cause is and then try to fix it takes a while too.
It just goes to show that your best chances are if both people are relatively young (and financially stable as much as possible), men and women having kids in their late 40s and 50s is like playing Russian roulette.
