The Montreal Screwjob made the Mr. Mcmahon character, which basically made Austin the draw he became. Starrcade '97 main event was booked wrong with the phantom fast count, which killed the Sting-NWO angle with a unsatisfying payoff. The fast count was only used to insert Bret Hart into the match. It's no coincidence that WWE got better after he left, and WCW got worse when he joined them. Was World champ in WWE during the down years, and champ in WCW during their down years.

:ohhh:

Define popularity, the #'s say otherwise. Name some Bret classics that didn't involve HBK or Austin. What about those epic feuds with Lawler and Yokozuna? :heh:
There's no way you made this thread thinking this.

wrestling was going through a down period during the mid 90s no doubt, but there are ups and downs in that biz. it was coming off of the 80s Hogan Era. But Bret was far and away the most popular guy from late 92-95.

Bret vs Bulldog Summerslam 92
Bret vs Piper WM 8
Bret vs Owen WM X
Bret vs Perfect Summerslam 91
Bret vs Perfect KOTR
Bret vs Diesel Suvivor Series 1995

there are lots more, even without adding in 2 of his top rivals

Seriously? Smarks love calling every popular wrestler overrated. Funny thing is if Bret came out today smarks would be on his nuts like crazy and demanding that he get a push :rudy:

Are you going to name some?

It's one thing to discredit Bret for his promos or whatever but to say that one of the greatest tag team and singles competitors ever just has 2 good matches is asinine. Even the Kliq doesn't have your back on this. Chill while you're ahead friend.

Bret vs. Flair on Raw when I was a kid was a huge one for me as a young fan. I thought Bret was going to stay wrestling for the IC belt, instead he made the jump to main event status. :gladbron:

OP is nuts saying Bret had no memorable matches, he had a bunch of matches that had clever finishes/ending to them.

To be fair though, he's not that overrated compared to dudes like Christian or William Regal, consistently over midcarders, who the IWC swears would've been huge and were rare talents.

1. Bland personality/gimmick.
Not a big deal usually, but how many of the GOATS is as dry as Bret is.

2. Boring wrestler.
Wrestled like his personality, he was technically sound, but he wrestled like a robot with no emotion. Chris Benoit was a technician, but unlike Bret his matches were exciting. Bret is lucky he got paired with HBK.

3. Not a draw.
Bret Hart headlined/responsible for two of the WWE's lowest PPV buyrates.

Also, something nobody ever brings up is he was the reason for WWE overtaking WCW in the Monday Night Wars. To me the two events that changed both companies was the Montreal Screwjob (Nov. 97) and Starrcade '97 (Dec. 97).

Hogan was right for not putting him over, and we should be thankful to Goldberg for ending his career.

I was waiting for the response in the Raw thread, then come home to find a thread on it. Looks like most of my TSC brehs already gave that work.

We can debate all that sales/draw stuff, HBK was in that same boat circa-96 but I would never use it to discredit him. Assuming we're talking strictly wrestling here:

wrestling was going through a down period during the mid 90s no doubt, but there are ups and downs in that biz. it was coming off of the 80s Hogan Era. But Bret was far and away the most popular guy from late 92-95.

This.

Not to mention he could extract solid (maybe not classics) but SOLID matches out of guys like Bam Bam, Vader, a rookie 1-2-3 kid, and Nash twice, actually. It's crazy how a good majority of wrestlers had their best match with Bret. Integral part in introducting/debuting the ladder match and look at the classics that led us to.

Despite the avi, I really don't even stan for Bret like that. I think he's probably 3rd tier in terms of complete superstar. 1st tier being obviously Rock/SCSA/Hogan. But I easily have him 1st tier as a worker/technician/seller/storytelling/unique finishes and overall match quality. To say overrated though? I barely even hear anyone call him GOAT other than a choice few

Terrible.
