Trump went and talked to actual voters, then activated a bunch of new ones to vote for him. In 2016, he was unequivocally a good campaigner.

And he still would have lost had Hillary bothered to actually visit voters and talk to them, but she basically stayed cloistered and distant, let Trump set the narrative about her, failed to get her own voters excited, and relied on nonsense Robby Mook narratives about AZ and GA coming through for her one cycle too early.

I read a book called Shattered on the 16 Clinton campaign, and it was probably a little rushed, came out in early 2017, but it had the exact reasons why her campaign didn't work. Mook and Podesta, controlled two wings of the campaign, and it led to a divided status, and a lot of easy mistakes. Mook over relied on algorithmic data about states and it cost them the votes they needed on the ground.
