You'd need the entire passage before it can be said she's pro-private prisons.:russell:

You could try to extrapolate that given much of her record, but I've used similar framing for why we should incarcerate fewer people. Its rhetoric 101. If I'm trying to appeal to the "fiscal conservatives" in the audience, then I'm going to frame it around the failed economic aspects of the current system.

Kamala is very technocratic* so starting with an unemotional argument based on the economics isn't surprising at all. We don't know what her conclusions were because they weren't posted.

* technocrats typically operate under the paradigm that the ends justify the means. Her prosecution of truancy and how she spoke about it indicates this.

Well, if Biden is gonna run he might as well just announce it. :yeshrug:

I don't have a horse in this race at this point, but let's be honest: Regardless of who wins, Dem voters won't be happy, they'll say it was rigged, will decide to not vote, etc.

i'd like to see a "poll" with only those who have officially announced.

anyway, yea, biden needs to just announce or shut it down, not like there's a lack of candidates

also find it funny how folks in this thread keep acting like america is so progressive...just spent half of last night in a thread on linkedin arguing with a huge segment of fukking women who don't believe that women should get 6 months paid maternity leave, they don't even think we deserve government sanctioned leave of any length...this is america

I don't think 6 month paid maternity leave is a hardcore Progressive issue or even an issue Progressives champion actually.

America has a lot of shytheaded conservatism baked into its ideological DNA, but when discussing these issues we often fall into the trap of discounting the voices of the marginalized, who are also citizens. It's like saying everyone in the deep south loved white supremacy during Jim Crow because they kept on electing segregationist politicians. The defining characteristic of America is the radical exclusion of large swaths of the citizenry from engaging in national/communal self-determination, not the conservatism that results from that disenfranchisement.

As for your LinkedIn conversation, I would look at the demographic you're talking to. Progressivism is generally a luxury for the type of people who have the means and time to engage in LinkedIn arguments. I don't see many single mothers working 2+ menial labour jobs for minimum wage on LinkedIn. People like that are the real silent majority.

guaranteed paid maternity leave is definitely a progressive issue, it's a women's rights/equality issue (actually family as there is a movement for better paternity leave as that may stem some of the inequality between the sexes as people stop out of work). whether it's 6 months or not or some other length of time is irrelevant, the need for guaranteed time off for new parents is a progressive platform.
