America has a lot of shytheaded conservatism baked into its ideological DNA, but when discussing these issues we often fall into the trap of discounting the voices of the marginalized, who are also citizens. It's like saying everyone in the deep south loved white supremacy during Jim Crow because they kept on electing segregationist politicians. The defining characteristic of America is the radical exclusion of large swaths of the citizenry from engaging in national/communal self-determination, not the conservatism that results from that disenfranchisement.

As for your LinkedIn conversation, I would look at the demographic you're talking to. Progressivism is generally a luxury for the type of people who have the means and time to engage in LinkedIn arguments. I don't see many single mothers working 2+ menial labour jobs for minimum wage on LinkedIn. People like that are the real silent majority.
while it's probably not the wage worker, it very much was women in "lesser" roles, some of it is ideas baked into our heads from conservatism, but the other part is knowing they work roles that are highly replaceable and don't think mat leave is worth the risk of not having a job

Ah, thanks for the clarification. In that case, I see their reticence towards mat leave not as a sign of conservative belief, but as fear of reprisal from a system hostile to workers and women. Progressivism is a cure for that fear and anxiety. No woman should have to choose between mat leave and their job/career, and the way to ensure that is to elect progressives who will fight for that belief. A large goal of the conservative con that has been run on America is the belief that the current power imbalance that favours the capital/ownership class over the working class is an immutable, natural state of being, as opposed to something that can be changed through political action. It's the state's job to use its power to embolden the citizenry with a sense of stability and economic safety. Those women are victims and potential allies in this progressive fight.

guaranteed paid maternity leave is definitely a progressive issue, it's a women's rights/equality issue (actually family as there is a movement for better paternity leave as that may stem some of the inequality between the sexes as people stop out of work). whether it's 6 months or not or some other length of time is irrelevant, the need for guaranteed time off for new parents is a progressive platform.
Although Progressives may agree with it no politician locally or nationally is running on it. It's a low priority.

i feel you on this, my point in posting this though is to counter the very progressive movement here. people cite poll numbers for certain ideas, but when it comes time for people to vote those ideas into reality, they don't, this conversation on mat leave was an example of the rationale people go through when voting down things in their best interest. i've simply been cautioning that although we need A LOT of change, it's not happening in one cycle and i really don't think 2020 is the cycle it happens at all, i don't see an "extreme" left candidate being nominated (or if nominated, they won't win)

Well, if Biden is gonna run he might as well just announce it. :yeshrug:

I don't have a horse in this race at this point, but let's be honest: Regardless of who wins, Dem voters won't be happy, they'll say it was rigged, will decide to not vote, etc.

Trump really bout to win 2020 all cause some people can’t help but snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

also find it funny how folks in this thread keep acting like america is so progressive...just spent half of last night in a thread on linkedin arguing with a huge segment of fukking women who don't believe that women should get 6 months paid maternity leave, they don't even think we deserve government sanctioned leave of any length...this is america
Yeah country is a lot more central than some of our friends on here like to admit.

personally i don't think a progressive will win the nomination. that's ok because we really need to focus on voting in progressive congress members. if we get a progressive congress and a dem potus then we'll really get things crackin.

i do want to see someone who can rattle the dotard though and not play nice. there's so much ammunition to troll him with. he'll spend most of his executive time whining or raging about how he's sooo mistreated. type of dude that has shown he will fold if you take it right to his chest.
