The biggest disconnect I seem to have with the mock drafts is Jaylen Brown.
He is way stronger or quicker than anyone that tries to guard him at the college level. Plays a lot of "bully ball"..
In the 8 games I watched from Cal so far (against relatively good competition - 4 Pac 12 games + Virginia, St Mary's, SD State and Richmond) he has been able to get to the hoop almost at will. He looks like mini LeBron against college players.
41-66 on 2 pointers (62%)
That and the fact that he passes the eye test by a mile and seems to have a mature outlook and personality are the reasons why some have him pegged top 3 this year.
What worries me however is everything else. He will not be able to bully NBA players. He isn't going to be quicker or stronger than every defender.
So in those same 8 games. 6-22 three point shooting (27%)
27 turnovers (4.1 turnovers per 36)
Just 11 assists and 3 steals.
Not to mention his defensive fundamentals and ability to read opponents is non existent.
He does have 49 boards and 6 blocks but when you realize that Cal often uses him at PF those numbers becomes much less impressive.
Until he can continue to shoot 60% from 2, turnover the ball a lot less and play some actual D, I refuse to rank him in my top 15. I probably wouldn't take him until about 25.
Certainly take Jamal Murray over him and Murray isn't top 15 either for me personally rn.
Because of his impressive athletic ability (and the other stuff I mentioned) i do expect him to get drafted top 5 but we will most likely see him struggle from the field and put up Mudiayesque shooting percentages next season.
The talent is there but who knows if it will ever get to anywhere near his ceiling.
At least as of now, 90 out of a 100, I'm taking Valentine or Hield over him. You know day 1 these guys will come in and give you 3 and D and with Valentine he also provides some incredible passing skills.
Sorry for being a bit Long winded but I know as I continue to add draft rankings this season the "why no Brown?" question will come up so I wanted to go into detail and explain it right away.
