Gar: We were very excited Teague was on board. Got a lot of value. As a Freshman was a starting PG with 5 other NBA players. Helped KU to Championship. Scouts followed him since HS. Big time HS recruit.
Gives us another guy that can break down the D and get to the point. Make plays for himself/others. All background info -- competitive, winner, which everyone knows the Bulls stress. Fits into organization. High profile winning programs.
Great speed and quickness. High ceiling. Value @ 29.
Thibs: Better as season went a long. Quickness. Push in transition.
Gar: Big time scorer in HS but impressed that last year had scorer's mentality but progressed through the year. See progress game by game. By end of the season, bought into KU, became a distributor. Penetrate defenses. Make plays. Period of time to develop. High ceiling/lot of potential.
Thibs: Big step college to NBA. Played in # of big games, around the pro game. Good progress through last season.
Gar: We were looking at someone who can push in transition/make plays. Excellent athlete. Was top 2-3 athletes at combine. Explosive. A plus.
Gar: Picked him over shooter -- implied BPA at that spot. If two guys are comparable but one guy fits more of a need, we go that way. But always try to go with best talent to fit our system/culture. He is a talent. He will fit the system/culture.
Coach Cal said he improved on D. Long arms. Length. Tools to be good on D.
Still need to address PG in FA.
(Asked if he came close to trading Deng) -- We don't respond to rumors, like the core group of guys we have, and the direction we are headed. Hit in (Rose) short term, long-term headed in right direction. Keep the big picture in mind. Absolutely not shopping our players, but conversations -- yes, all teams do about each player.
Jerry has been consistent with us -- put together the best basketball team we can. Will make basketball decisions, not financial decisions, but finances always impact the decisions we make (***Isn't that contradicting yourself Gar?!?!***)
Thibs: 1st part is to learn how to be a pro. 2nd part based on performance. Then see where we are. If he shows he can play, then he can play. Hate to do that, but can compare to Jeff Teague, but he is his own player. Has his own strengths. Want him to be here as early as possible.
Gar: Always look long-term. Best prospect on the board. Were to go with BPA not a specific need.
