Damn.. I didn't know so many ppl thought Kendrick was on a higher level lyrically than Cole, especially in 2024 with the way Cole been spazzin the past few years
I can understand Kendrick's artistry being higher, but as far as pure rapping, I didn't know I was in the minority here and I'm a fan of both
Has this always been the case here or did ppl come to this conclusion after he bowed out of the Drake feud? I know that shyt rubbed a lot of ppl the wrong way but I'm talkin about pure rapping ability... a lot of ppl don't fukk with Em but they don't discredit is rhyming ability.. not sayin that's the case here just using it as an example
Cole only recently (last 6-7 years) started really getting acclaim like that as an dope rapper and it was mostly for him absolutely murdering features (16s) and not for his ability as a complete artist. Before FHD he had the Nyquil and trash bar stigma, even though it was always greatly exaggerated.
IMO, it's a major difference between dropping dgreat surface level bars with great wordplay and being able to conceptually and lyrically say something that sticks with the listener long term. He's mastered the former but the latter is his achilles heel for me. He drops good projects but still hasn't proven that he is able to consistently drop truly great bodies of work that can be replayed over and over.
Even his magnum opus (FHD) is great for him but not necessarily considered all time great by rhe masses. At this point, I believe we have enough evidence to show it's just who he is (great at what he's great at) and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Between throwing the rock and hiding his hand, the apology, and some of the moves afterward (Port Antonio), I think he's probably fine with that too
