Variety reported that McQueen had just been presented with the society's Best Director award when Armond White, the editor of the weekly City Arts paper, called out from his table at the back of the room.
"You’re an embarrassing doorman and garbage man," White reportedly yelled. "(Expletive) you. Kiss my ass."

I bet McQueen sat there like a bytch.:wow:

Don't see what's so great about the movie.

From a pure movie standpoint it wasn't entertaining at all, and as a black person there's nothing the movie could have taught me about slavery.

Waste of $8 if you ask me

so an autobiography of someone who actually was a "free man", stolen, and spent 12 years as a slave - all while trying to make it the best he can does nothing for you or does not provide any insight on the mans life? It wasn't a slavery movie, it was the visual depiction of the a man's life for 12 years being stripped of everything, all of his learned ways in the "new world", and being forced into a life tha the knew he didn't belong (compared to slaves who actually belong - despite how that sounds).

I understand that. But it just wasn't a good movie IMO. Take the racial and emotional elements out of it and it was just a boring, uneventful movie.

if you take the racial elements out of it, it's not boring

you take the emotional elements out of it....:dwillhuh: breh breh, read what you just said. Not trying to herb you, but you just said "take the emotional elements out of it" - that's exactly the whole purpose of THIS movie. Of course it's going to be boring and uneventful and that's why McQueen is being lauded for the inclusion of those emotional elements. Every character could have been white (removing the racial elements) and it would still have been a powerful film due to the emotional tribulations. I don't know - it sounds like everyone is stretching and reaching not to give the film credit. And I'm curious if it's due to that part of the population who refuses to accept or dignify that there's inequality historically and present day. So when something like this is presented it's immeditiately torn down and discarded as :trash:

:comeon: man I'm as black as they come and I see the inequalites everyday. Which is why the movie had no emotional impact on me. I can understand some of your praise of the movie for showing those brutalities, and it's good for people who don't understand the history to see. But I am not one of those people. The movie was slow, there was no real conflict or resolution. You didn't know what you were leading up to, or what the main character could/should do to fix his problem.

The movie was just "white folks were savages, and life was hopeless for blacks, even if they thought they were free"

I already knew that, didnt need to go see a movie to tell me:manny:

this wasn't fiction, this was real story. Just because you have been desensitized to the point you are expecting some sort of plot twist or whatever doesn't make this a valuable movie. There were conflicts, there were resolutions, it's a documentary about living. Documentaries are usually very highly rated and it's funny there's this backlash against this one.

I do think the movie has a place and it should be seen, and I'm glad it was made, and has gained the exposure that it has. The majority of people in the theatre with me were white.

I'm just speaking on my own personal experience. I was not entertained, I didn't learn anything, and the movie was a bore.

Truth will always be frowned upon in this country as it pertains to its history. This movie makes the majority uncomfortable because it's a FACTUAL depiction of a black man's life in the U.S... I'm also not surprised that some blacks are attacking the film......some of us are still programmed to find fault in anything that makes whites look bad. A lot of the racial dynamics in this movie are still present today, that in itself makes it worth at least one watch.

I have no issues with movies like these being made. I prefer the truth, not the :duck:they told us about Columbus and Lincoln in grade school
