Yeah, Spider-Man 2 seems like a good movie until you really sit down and look at some of the events that happen in it :pachaha:

A lot of people are blinded by nostalgia with that one. And this coming from someone who loves it.

That’s what I said. I love it although I do not like Tobey and still think it’s a great flick but it’s not on this level. Not even close. The train sequence is awesome, the character beats are good, but some of the stuff between MJ and Peter is undercooked for something that’s the center of the movie. Ock needs money to rebuild and he got that money after coming away with two bags after a bank heist? Ok.

and then there’s just some of the Rami traditional cheese that definitely is hit or miss for me and much more miss as time goes on. It’s just not as tight as dark knight.

Spider-Man 2 is the breakdown of everyone's character and the struggle of linking who you are and the responsibility to maintain your dreams. Success and failure are so distant, yet ever presently linked in our lives, whether we are working on it from the bottom or have attained it at the top. The fall is as close as taking a step.

The contrast of Peter and Octavius sitting at the table, Otto with his life of science and his greatest love Rosie, the best of both worlds. Peter is gushing at what his life could look like until he's asked if he's in love. Then Spiderman takes at the seat at the table, his love life is complicated he replies.

Peter speaking with uncle Ben in his mind to close off the chapter of him wearing the mask and live life the way he wants.

This is something that bothers me about superheroes, they get the power and everything falls in line. They have the money, get the girl and their identity being revealed doesn't affect their lives. Peter lives in a typical NY apartment and can't afford the rent.

His aunt has to move out of her home because she can't help with the bills. His love interest is taken by an astronaut, someone who has their life in order and is committed to her.

His best friend despises him because of the Spiderman affiliation.

Loses his job trying to be hero and his grades are tanking.

He has to watch that and bear it all because he has powers that he has to be responsible to the world for.

The depth of character development and first person like script and cinematography puts this outside of the superhero genre.

The blend of CGI and reality is so smooth, real sets, real arm movements with Doc Ock.

The score and lighting of scenes, character's faces and environments was beautifully done. Characters are often layered with shadows or an orange tinge to broadcast their emotional state and hopefulness.

This all without diving into the brilliant casting and the pseudo father figure role Octavius provided and all that comes with it. The hope, disappointment and outgrowing each other.

I agree with mostly all of that. But then my contention is dark knight does all of that better. The character development, the psychological issues, the emotion, and it asks larger questions Spider-Man 2 won’t but also asks the same question Spider-Man 2 is all about: what’s the cost of being a hero? Obviously they both have different answers because Batman and Spider-Man are different characters, but Nolan pulls it off better by showing true cost and true sacrifice. Peter loses a friend in Spider-Man 2 but that friend is still alive. But in the end he can still be peter Parker and Spider-Man. Batman loses the woman he loves, the guy he wanted to replace him, and his ability to be Batman. And he blames himself for it all because of choices he made or didn’t make.

Again those are all valid points in the flicks favor but Nolan was working on a different level than Rami. And if we’re talking technical stuff, there’s no comparison.
