Pretty much the main goal now is to maintain internal stability. And that is to defeat Islamist armed groups and other armed groups as well. Once internal stability is maintained then you can focus in strengthening the military.Depends on the purpose....
Admittedly the only modern equipment is probably the Su-27 combat aircraft in Ethiopia and the T-72 tanks that South Sudan is getting from Russia (not sure if they ever got the first 33 which were on a boat Somali pirates captured before independence). However, I think if internal stability is the first focus, it could work if coordinated. In time they need to buy new stuff from Russia/China.
Again you bring up Saudi Arabia. They have all those fancy toys and yet can't defeat an insurgent group with Ak's and flip flops. The US has been in Afghanistan for 16 years and still can't defeat the Taliban. Iran has been sanctioned by the west since 1975 but they have developed their military to be a top notch assymetrical force. Conventional warfare isn't the only way to win a war nowadays. You Do realize Egypt, Jordan,Saudi Arabia were funded by the US and Euro nations for decades which means they have modern technology
For example, you say Ethiopia is top 5 military, how?? they Air Force has around 30 Soviet era fighter planes
Saudi Arabia has 70+ modern F16s,Eurofighters
It’s technology over manpower breh, who would win? 100 nikkas with machine guns or 1000 nikkas with bow & arrow?
