Roger Gutierrez: I Did This For My Mother, Venezuela, My Children
By BoxingScene Staff

Published On Sun Jan 3, 2021, 12:05 PM EST

Roger Gutierrez arrived in Dallas with a promise and he kept it. The Venezuelan fighter promised his late mother a world title and he will return to his native Venezuela with the World Boxing Association (WBA) "regular" super featherweight black and gold belt after defeating Rene Alvarado by unanimous decision at the American Airlines Center.

Gutierrez got a valuable 113-112 win on the three judges’ cards in a bout in which he knocked down his opponent three times (twice in the third round and once in the twelfth).

“I am so happy for this victory,” said Gutierrez. “I did this for my mother. There’s not much more I can say. I had to look for the knockout. I knew I had to do that to win. I want to thank my manager Rafael Moron, the WBA and Golden Boy. This is for Venezuela and for my children.”

In 2018, the Venezuelan was going through difficult times in the sport, and even posted in his social media that he was retiring from sports. The insistence of his relatives and family made him focus and continue in the discipline he loves to get back on track with several important victories, especially the one against Eduardo “Rocky” Martinez in 2019.

When his mother María Neida was diagnosed with cancer it served as a motivation for Roger. He promised to become a world champion and tackled a long road until Saturday night’s opportunity.

When Gutierrez was confirmed to fight Alvarado, the Maracaibo native traveled from Venezuela to Medellín, Colombia, where he began one of the most demanding and important training camps of his career. Everything was going well and the Venezuelan felt better than ever about the match.

However, on November 29, the tragic news arrived to shake up the world of the now champion. In the midst of the intensity of his camp and his personal motivation, he received the terrible news of his mother’s passing, which hit him harder than any boxer’s punch in the ring.

Roger, overwhelmed, had to make a decision: attend his mother’s funeral in Venezuela and forget about his fight, or go ahead with the title fight in front of him. But a promise is a promise, and as hard as the decision was, “The Kid” decided to stay in his camp for the fight against the Nicaraguan.

He knew it would be a tough fight. Roger had already lost to Alvarado in 2017 by TKO in eight rounds and he had to improve a lot. But he rose to the occasion, showed how much progress he has made in three years and wrote a different history with his victory.

His punch was a threat and conditioned in the fight after his two knockdowns in the third chapter. First with a right uppercut, then with a combination of punches, but that was not enough to end the fight as Alvarado survived and recovered to attack Gutiérrez incessantly in the following rounds, who looked tired in the middle of the fight.

In addition to the fatigue caused by his aggressiveness in the first rounds, he had to deal with a cut on his left eyebrow. But he always stood up, and when his body didn’t respond, his heart spoke for him.

A left hook in the final round touched Alvarado’s jaw and sent him back to the canvas for a third time.

Gutiérrez shed tears in the ring after the announcer proclaimed him the new WBA champion, with a score of 113-112 by all three judges.

The 25-year-old fighter won his 25th fight, while he has 3 losses, 1 draw, and 21 KOs. Alvarado, who did not give up his belt easily, left his record at 32 wins, 9 losses, and 20 KOs.

you calling the shyt flurries trying minimize what he did in the ring. me and luke campbell calling it for what it was. you so contrarian for the sake of it, i'm trying save you from starting a losing agenda breh
don't try to recalibrate what you talking about now nikka :mjlol:, you replied to me talking about campbell spinning garcia head around and garcia was throwing nothing but flurries while coming forward those your words. stick to the footwork and other valid shyt or risk being wrong as fukk :what:

ryan is about as ready for tank as he ever will be. he has flaws but i dont see him becoming a different fighter. he will probably always be a fairly popular guy who gives you action and beats up on those who cant take advantage of his flaws but gets beat by the cream of the crop.

Exactly

Dude almost had 2 years to work on the flaws he showed against Morales and Velez back in 2018 and he didn't. All the pulling straight back, no head movement, shytty footwork, etc...still manifested against the best opponent he ever faced. He gutted it out, but its still not a good look. If he hasn't fixed that shyt yet, I doubt it gets fixed now. He is who he is.

With dudes like Ryan Garcia, if you can't fix their flaws, you double down on their strengths. If they can get him to up his work rate behind a steady jab and cut off the ring better, he'd be an even bigger problem. All that following dudes around looking for the perfect shot, will allow the more aggressive guys to test that chin again.

Am I the only one hoping Ryan Vs Haney doesn’t happen yet?? These kids are what 21-22?? They haven’t even fully grown into their adult fighter bodies/styles yet. Their prime is still years from now. I mean, that’s a legit PPV SUPERFIGHT at 147 in like 4 years. That’s Floyd vs Oscar. I say let these kids keep learning and getting experience. There’s plenty of decent guys they can fight climbing up the ranks to get good experience from.

I mean, did Floyd, Manny, Oscar, Cotto etc fight top level, equally matched up popular adversaries at that age? Of course not. Floyd vs Judah happened when they were like 30 years old and most importantly, in their prime. The winner in Ryan vs Haney right now is not definitive and could easily lose the rematch in a blow out fashion in a few years.

Let these fights marinate a bit longer. Let these kids get better, faster, stronger and meet up at their prime and full potential. Yeah we don’t want to drag it out to they’re 30 but sheesh, 21-22? Come on. Pushing for these fights right now is bad IMO.

you the only. That marinating shyt always leads to upsets. Keep it real, the longer the wait, the less likely it is to happen. Get it done now

It's not even how bad the knockdown was. It's the punch he got hit with. That shyt was a telegraphed looping left hook. Top fighters don't get hit with shyt like that. He didnt try to move his head or even keep his guard up. It looked as if he didn't see the punch at all. There's something missing there. He doesn't seem to be able to think quickly on his toes.

If you're gonna have slow feet you better have great upper body movement. But Ryan has neither. Dude looks very stiff and awkward.

But with his speed and power he's always gonna be a threat for anybody early on. If he clips Teo or tank he could hurt em. But those guys are too smart to trade with him early on. They'll just take their time and wait for Ryan to make mistakes. They don't even have to press the issue. Ryan is so undisciplined right now he repeatedly puts himself in dumb situations. So It's not just the physical things. Last night showed me Ryan has some mental flaws that I don't think he can overcome. At least not any time soon. And now everybody knows he got that China in his chin too.

My nikka, I was thinking the same exact shyt while I was typing all that out. :mjlol:

Guys like Garcia and Khan will never be thinkers. Trying to make them do all that cerebral shyt, will only get them lit up by the fringe contender nikkas they supposed to be bodying.

Got them plodding around trying to figure out boxing style clash fractions in their head while some hungry fringe contender is going for broke will be a recipe for disaster.

I mean he was still throwing more than Campbell, but it was just by a little, which was still giving Luke just enough time to counter between the openings or turn him.

Garcia needs to be averaging like 70 punches a round. He does that and most dudes are being overwhelmed by the power an activity. Its one of the reasons Punisher was a problem.

Quality match making, cuz they knew Luke won't go for broke. He's a legit quality threat, but no killer. You could see the nervous bewildered look on Ryan face right after the knockdown. The kid was still trying to figure shyt out about himself. Instead of rushing the process, Luke allowed him to take his time and figure it out and then walk him down. :hhh: That's like shooting a wolf in the shoulder, but instead of finishing it off, you let it crawl over and bite you.

fukking UK school of boxing will have to be temporarily shut down for about a week or so after this one. :snoop:

Seems like Freddie's not getting big fighters anymore. He's pretty much Manny's water boy now. I think Robert Garcia might be good though :yeshrug:......look what he did with maidana. Robert is good at focusing on a fighters strengths.

Yea Roach is :flabbynsick:

Ryan stays with team Canelo until he takes a L :yeshrug:
