The Nina Simone biopic hits theaters next month. Her daughter hopes fans stay home.
Simone’s daughter, actress and singer Lisa Simone Kelly, has vocally disavowed the film for years. In 2012, Simone Kelly told the New York Times that she respected Saldana but was disappointed by the choice to cast her in the role.
“My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark,” Simone Kelly told the Times. “Appearance-wise this is not the best choice.”
She has also voiced anger that her family was excluded from the biopic’s production process.
“How does someone just decide to do a story about someone and completely bypass family?” she said in a 2012 interview with Ebony Magazine.
I told yall they putting half breeds as the face of our people today..........They know damn well this shyt not flying.........Stop trying to force feed half breeds as Black people......shyt going to get called out from now on.....They done put her in some disrespectful proverbial "Black face" and gave her a nose job.....
'Nina' Film Poster Released, Twitter Not Feeling Zoe Saldana as the High Priestess of Soul - Atlanta Black Star
The film will focus on the 15-time Grammy nominee and Grammy Hall of Fame Recipient and her culturally impactful songs and passionate politics. Simone will be portrayed by actress Zoe Saldana to the displeasure of many fans. There was fan outrage when The Guardians of the Galaxy actress was cast nearly two years ago. Saldana has been under extreme scrutiny because skin-tone politics came into play. Simone has a richer complexion and profound Black features that Saldana lacks. The actress had to be “darkened” to appear more like Simone.
Twitter users did not forget this controversy.
Many of the users are appalled that the filmmakers did not hire a dark-skinned woman to portray Simone. Viola Davis, Danai Gurira and other women could have been much better casting decisions, but Hollywood has a colorism problem when dealing with Blackness.
Nina will be released in theaters, VOD and Digital HD on April 22, 2016.

I thought it was a bad casting.
This is entire movie has been a disaster. Nina in theatres April 22nd.
So you don't think Zoe Saldana is mixed? Are you always this stupid?
Even without the skin issues, it didn't seem like the best choice. Nina was a deep voice woman, not a sex symbol, super strong personality. I don't see the character traits in Zoe's acting so far. Maybe she'll surprise me. I felt the same way when I heard Affleck was playing Batman, but now that people are saying he did great, I'm a little more open to the idea. We'll see. I think ole girl from SNL would have been the best as far as look a likes, but I don't know what kind of acting chops she has.Agreed.
If we gonna be honest with ourselves, is it really any different than Will playing the Nigerian Doctor in Concussion or buddy in The Pursuit Of Happiness?
Lightskin brehs and brehettes playing darker skins people is rediculous in itself to me. The fact they had to cake on makeup for Zoe to even play Nina says enough. It's be the same with a darker skin person playing a lighskin dude. You want my man Michael K Williams from the Wire playing Obama?
I get that she probably thought it was a good movie, script, etc and that Nina would be a good person to portray but if you gotta cake up with makeup to play her, maybe you should have let someone else do it.
Dude...u went left when u didnt have to and u totally missed my point.
...My point is that there was little uproar about a whiteman putting on Blackface for the sake of comedy, hell, even you said there was none. So I dont wanna hear sh*t about a Blackwoman putting on makeup to darken her face to play a Blackwoman.
