The story is deeper than colour, it's about physical features. Nina's features was a strong part of her image/music/story.
It's like the Color Purple movie. The lead role couldn't be given to a Halle Berry type, the features of the character where important. Infact a young Whoopi would've been ideal for Nina.
Male examples aren't as good. X was about charisma, powerful orator. His skin colour wasn't as important in the latter days. He spoke about being a field negro and shyt.

Anika noni rose is a great actress! Holly wood doesn't let enough black actresses shine for them to be box office stars. And lastly, this movies is going to attract a certain audience point blank, its the type of movie quality acting will carry because biopics aren't really mass appeal movies like action adventures, as long as you have good acting, the people interested in Nina Simone will see it, a bigger name (and let's not act like Zoe is the reason ppl have seen the movies she's been in) isn't really going to change the outcome
