Bi-racial genetically and black socially are the same thing in this country. I wish you all would get over it and move on. :yeshrug:

You're trying very hard not to label light skinned people (because that's what you base it on, not actual genetics) black but benefit from that social label in many ways. If you really believe what you type, you'd shun a lot of the things you have/do in life, but you don't so, :yeshrug:

You talk a good game, but you're not really about it so :smugbiden:
Then Zoe being light skinned shouldn't be a problem, but to a lot of people it is. After all black is black. :comeon:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simone_(actress)

Simone (born Lisa Celeste Stroud on September 12, 1962) is a Broadway actress/singer and the daughter of Nina Simone.

Prior to her acting career, Simone served in the United States Air Force as an engineering assistant. Afterwards, she sang background for various European artists and was part of Spanish artist Raphael's touring chorus.

Simone's stage debut was in a national tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, as Soul Sister and understudy for Mary. In 1996, she continued her career as a swing and female understudy in the original Broadway production of Rent. Later that year, Simone performed the lead role of Mimi Marquez in its first national tour, from November 1996 to April 1998.

Would anyone have had a problem if the daughter were playing the role of Nina Simone instead? She's younger than Viola Davis. :leon:

they're bi-racial genetically, and bi-racial socially. historically and presently, bi-racials have had a much easier time assimilating into society over their dark skinned counterparts.

And at the end of the day none of that matters, unless you make it matter. It's seems like you jut have an insecurity when it comes to your own skin color when it comes to mixed people. We've seen your girl's feet. She's clearly not black by your standards which is why I laugh when you step in topics like this.

My little sister looks like a straight up fair skinned East Indian with damn near straight hair. But she's genetically blacker than Snoop Dogg, if not, only by a few percentage points off.

Thats why I have to call this argument stupid anytime it's brought up cause a lot of you are just going on looks and still wrong as hell about someones genetic make up.

Like, I get that Hollywood likes light skinned blacks and all that other stuff, but I'm not seeing how Hollywood's biases should determine our ability to identify as one. That just makes all this black militant stuff you preach seem like passive aggressive BS. MLK was def not 100% black, nor was Malcolm, but I don't see you denouncing them, because it benefits you.

stop, just stop. it's idiotic that you have a problem with white woman/black male relationships when you consider their off spring black. i think it's perfectly natural for a dark skinned black person to have an insecurity towards bi-racials being considered one of them, because they aren't.

you're trying to walk a real fine line. which is why you're having trouble justifying your disdain for zoe as nina simons. when per your own beliefs, she's just as black as her. (socially)

Black people will always claim mixed race people as their own, because it behooves them to do so. It boosts their numbers and they get to say that President Obama is black, Oscar winner Halle Berry is black, Malcolm X is black and so on. They get to claim those people and more importantly their accomplishments.

Where would black people be today without mixed race people? :mjpls:

MOCO awl day
LOL @ this thread

It's ridiculous for Zoe to play Nina Simone because:
  • She doesn't look like Nina Simone
  • She's not a good actress
  • She's not a good actress
  • There are other women who are better suited to play Nina Simone
  • She's not a good actress
  • Zoe doesn't have the acting skills to portray such a dynamic, iconic woman.

It's important to note, that so much of Nina's music was tied up in her identity as a dark-skinned black women singing/performing in the 50s and 60s. Actresses don't always have to look like the historical figures they're playing. But SO MUCH of Nina's legacy is tied up in how she looked. I read a comment on another site that said "Nina's appearance was political and she used that heavily in her artistry and activism."

THAT is why people are (and should be) mad about this casting.
