Translation takes a while, and Falcom don't have the staff to do it themselves.

I haven't finished it yet, but I think I am close at around 55 hrs on nightmare difficulty. Although I always do all the side content and the exploration as well. According to these numbers How long is Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana? | HowLongToBeat the average playtime is around 50 hrs.
That time is honestly not that bad for a JRPG. It comes down to whether 50 hours is long for you because I mostly play JRPG's these days so my answer will be biased to some degree.
