Biggie saved the east coast when Death Row and the west were on top. That bullshyt has been spread for almost 30 years. When Death row first blew up with the chronic , Onyx had come out and went platinumm masta ace released a dope album that got spins, Wutang and Tribe in 93.. Then Snoop dropped a classic debut. After that, Nas dropped Ilmatic a few months later, Jeru's debut, and there were a lot of albums in between that. And some of them sold well. So Biggie did NOT bring the east coast back as the myth states

I’ll bite: “The south killed hip hop”

This was always a dumb one because when it took off, a lot of the top Southern artists at the time were more lyrical than the top selling NY acts.

I know that snap music and ringtone rap garbage was from the South but NY was jocking Dip Set and G-Unit heavily at the time and aside from Cam and Banks most of those dudes was questionable lyrically, getting by on swag and production. Wayne, TI, Luda and Ross, even Jeezy were nicer lyrically than most the popular NY acts from that era

The south became popular with No Limit, and basically all No Limit rappers were trash

YEP I always say this. Onyx was huge and going multi platinum when Death Row and the West were on top and they came out and had a hit with Slam and Throw Ya Gunz! They also won album of the year at the awards that year as well. Heads sleep on that and just go to Biggie brought the East back when they were doing in the west Coats reign on Top. Glad someone else said it I have said this for years. Wu Tang and Tribe as well as you said (Tribe was platinum plus at the time and had been doing it for years). Nas album caught on more later on after 94 and got big after IWW came out because it was slept on but you are right he was out.... Jeru had Come Clean which was HUGE at the time and dropped as well, check. Propers, post is 100% correct.

Myth I will add : Nas didn't have a good album after Illmatic until Stillmatic when IWW was a nice AF, he had the commercial success but he also had enough on there for the streets as well and had a fine balance, some say it's his best album which agree or disagree shows you it was hardly a drop off.... Jay said one good album every x amount of years, bullsh*t that was better than your 2nd and third albums Jay, easily.

NY was firmly on top of the rap world from 1997-2003 though. And most of the top artists far as sales and acclaim were elite or close to it aside from dudes like Puff and Ja who weren't really taken seriously as artists.

No Limit's run as a national factor started in 1997 and was basically over by the end of 1999.
