:whoa: I agree, he is the most generic rapper out subject matter wise. He raps about the same shyt Lil Wayne been rapping about for the last 10 years basically and isn't really clever or funny or anything....

I say he is unique in that he has a unique voice and an unorthodox delivery. Now I think his fans overhype him "unlocking flows" and shyt like that.

If he can find his niche, or find anything of substance to rap about I think he can do some things. But right now, he is kind of a novelty act to me

I ain't gonna lie, I usually don't listen much to rappers in that Lil/Young lane, but I was always give it at least a listen, one never knows. And it felt like the same old shyt so really don't understand the hype...this breh told me to listen to the Rich Gang tapes, we'll see...

Talent recognize talent. :blessed:
Notice Big Boi also gives him props even tho he doesn't say favorite rapper.
nikkas wasn't fukkin with the ATLiens like that but couldn't deny their hits:mjcry:

Regardless of how he conducts his personal life, even tho I don't buy all the gay shyt, can't deny he makes great MUSIC.
Breh flow/adlibs is like another instrument in a symphony. I can def hear the Outkast influence :lawd:

Andre 3000 is my second favorite emcee ever. That doesn't mean I need him to agree with my tastes in hip hop.

Its weird af Young Thug is his favorite, but it is what it is lmao.

Dude sounds generic as fukk tho :dwillhuh:

:dwillhuh:

I've said it in another YT thread, I'm shocked people praise him like this...I mean what exactly is he doing that other rappers/singers aren't? What is he talking about? How are his beats different? What's special about him?

I listened to first 3 tracks of Slime Season and was like...what is this:patrice:

shyt is like a mystery to me :dwillhuh:

are you really surprised in a hip hop game that's fallen the fukk off?

the short answer to your question is this: marketing. Repeat a falsehood long and hard enough and people will buy it. That's why these fans all say the same parrot shyt and bring up the word "melodies" 9 times outta 10 when talking about Thug. It's someone's job at the label to control the narrative/perception of an artist.

That's my line of reasoning most of the time too, but I try to give everyone a chance tho. That's how I could at least listen to a Travis Scott (Days Before, I find Rodeo is not worth discussing) or even a Trinidad James, in the sense I can at least enjoy it as "background" music. I have no higher expectations for this kind of "hip-hop". But so many people are propping Thug up, so I'm like let me try this once more.

Funny enough, it's the same as with Kendrick. I keep trying to find what's so amazing about him.

Breh, out of all the things I can understand folk criticizing him for - sounding generic isn't one. He's FAR from it.

:yeshrug: sounds like other singrappers mumbling about drugs/bytches/money to me.

TBH tho, I don't listen that much to this kind of "hip-hop" so yeah, this is an instance in which it kind of sounds the same to me.

The only flaw i have with thug is thtat he dnt talk bout sht and he doesnt say anything that hits

Atleast with future, u find some depth and dope sht lyrically

Thug tho is vapid lyrically
But he is better with flow and melodies and hooks

:wow:

Now that i think about it, I like more of thug's joints than hendrix :mjcry:

Which is probably how I differ from 99% of this board. Hence their constant bytching, negging and deflecting: I have high standards on my music because I don't care for background music.

Discussing background music and raising it up to a pedestal is a joke. Almost anything can function as background music.

That's because there isn't anything amazing about him. He's thoroughly mediocre in all aspects.

Mediocrity and hyperbolic marketing are what's hot right now.
