The RICO act is the racketeering influenced and corrupt organizations act - the purpose is to implicate a group of people that agree to organize in an effort to commit crimes. It works to identify not only the perpetrators of an individual act (murder, drug dealing, money laundering), but their leadership and the individuals supporting the organizations efforts.
If a group of criminals decide to steal diamonds from various jewelry stores, a boss sends his crew to the stores, they work with the stores security, they hire get away drivers, they get someone to knowingly buy the jewels, and someone to layer and launder the money…they are potentially guilty of not only their individual crime (getaway driver as an accesory after the fact, or the accountant for money laundering), theyre all potentially guilty of the RICO act for being a part of the criminal organization and its conspiracy to commit crimes.
Its used to get the accountant to snitch on the boss for a proffer / less time.
