Here's the thing, getting your car broken into is bad regardless of whether you keep anything of value in it.

Most people keep their insurance and registration in the car right? You don't carry that around everywhere…….There are criminals breaking into cars specifically to take that information for identity theft. I've seen it happen.
what do they do w/ your insurance and reg

Your insurance and registration has your name, telephone and address on it……Everything needed for identity theft. Credit Card fraud. There's all types of shyt you can do if you have all of that information or any other paperwork.

Once I was in college and someone broke into my homie's car and took nothing but paperwork….we were so confused until the cop explained the deal to us.

Coincidence maybe. My purple belt (at the time) in brazillian jiujitsu was also in there. That Gracie symbol may have scared them. :blessed:

Lol the thought of breaking into a car to find a purple belt being something of caution is hilarious

Here's just one example…….

Stolen insurance cards are also used by criminal organizations to make false claims. “We’ve had cases where it looks like at the time when the vehicle was in for service the information or insurance pink card taken, without the owner’s knowledge.

“There was a group working in western Ontario, which set up a fake window glass company, started collecting these certificates of insurance for people’s cars and putting in fake window glass claims to the insurance companies. Then the cheque was sent off to the non-existing window glass company to cover it,” says Robertson.

In addition, vehicle permits have been used for personal identity fraud. “We have seen cases where the person has the stolen ownership papers, and applies for new ownership. It’s not common, but the name of the individual is now transferred. And then what they try and do is use that as an asset to either sell, or go get some other credit. So it could be the beginning of attempts on an identity theft,” says Robertson.
