yo, my mans. I'ma try and put you up on game, right quick. The pattern has some importance, but the lion's share of the dopeness of drums comes from its sonics (read: how hard it knocks).

Examples for my claim:

Dr. Dre's "Xxxplosive (prod. by Dr. Dre)" - the drum pattern is literally half a bar (kick, snare, hi hat) repeated throughout the entire track. It's the type of drum sounds used, how they're placed (quantized, swing, etc), and their mix / how they bang.

Nas' "N.Y. State of Mind (prod. by DJ Premier)" - This is another simple drum beat - a modified two-measure break from a Kool & the Gang record. Again, the dirty mix of the drums fits the pianos perfectly on this cut. It's all presentation of the sounds you display.

Focus on the sounds, homey. See that DJ Mustard run? Nothing he did was complicated with respect to programming drums or even melodies etc. Just the sounds worked lovely for its purpose.

My $0.02 USD.

couldne't have said it better, rza another one 2 kicks and snare half bar loop

Sometimes when I hear some drums that get my head instantly nodding, I take notes and/or straight jack the timing. It's a learning exercise and even tho it's not something you should rely on, it does provide some long term rewarding education on what a track needs

here's something that changed the game for me:

try moving your drum samples around the arrange page as audio files

be erratic, throw shyt at the wall and see what sticks

in your head you know what kinda drum patterns you like, but you're no drummer (am i right?) and may have trouble playing them out on the pads (as i do), i find myself just playing out really safe predictable patterns on the pads

get a simple pattern going on the arrange page, then just jam some shyt in there like literally ' a hi hat here', 'a second snare here'

if your workflow aint working changing

your left hand will always be able to do some shyt the right hand can't

well I mean you have to accept that and keep on going at it breh.

a lot of ish don't play out in your head as it would have played out in reality, but to master your craft is to do so. and then to take that even further so keep going
