Suck with breaks .... Suck with matching the tempo of the break to the sample:snoop:

this is a life long issue, i can tell ii few things i tried, i simplified things, just start with a kick and snare, do like quick 2 bar beat or 4, then use a different kick at the end of pattern or sequence. that got my brain working differently. my drum game stinks, but that allowed to tweek or manipulate how i do drums , idk if that makes sense

Try programming your drums in double time, if your normal tempo is 90 make your tempo 180. You can get some crazy grooves in my experience.

Maybe try Superior Drummer by Toontrack.
It has all kinds of Grooves (including Hip-Hop) and can kinda replace using drumbreaks since it's a realistic drum-vsti.

I think Oddisee uses it. If you listen to his music he has very intricate and different drumpatterns.

idk if this will work with ya og maschine.

this what i do in ableton when im having an off day with my drums.

put a kick on the 1 snare 2 kick 3 snare 4 for however many bars you want. add ya sample chops or whatever. then after that fill in kicks in snares to get the groove you want.

i like my drums loose so i dont use a metronome or quantize usually so if i do the above technique i nudge the notes around and what not.

ableton good for that, it wont allow you to mess up helps tighten up the timing of beats, for awhile i would do that and have a set bpm for everything(on purpose, even though ableton time warps everything) and then go back to doing the same thing on my ASR-X. , in ableton you can set how bars and have it loop and just practice hitting pads , keys. or copy paste shyt.

yo, my mans. I'ma try and put you up on game, right quick. The pattern has some importance, but the lion's share of the dopeness of drums comes from its sonics (read: how hard it knocks).

Examples for my claim:

Dr. Dre's "Xxxplosive (prod. by Dr. Dre)" - the drum pattern is literally half a bar (kick, snare, hi hat) repeated throughout the entire track. It's the type of drum sounds used, how they're placed (quantized, swing, etc), and their mix / how they bang.

Nas' "N.Y. State of Mind (prod. by DJ Premier)" - This is another simple drum beat - a modified two-measure break from a Kool & the Gang record. Again, the dirty mix of the drums fits the pianos perfectly on this cut. It's all presentation of the sounds you display.

Focus on the sounds, homey. See that DJ Mustard run? Nothing he did was complicated with respect to programming drums or even melodies etc. Just the sounds worked lovely for its purpose.

My $0.02 USD.

I don't get what's so hard about making a simple boom-bap drumpattern? :manny:
It's basically the drumsounds you chose cause the patterns are usually very simple.

Yea, it's all about the sounds and the swing. Of the two, the swing is the harder part. Not sure if dude is trying play his patterns in or if he's using the grid to draw in his drums, but if he's working with the grid only, that could also be the problem.

If what' you're trying to get is knocking drums it's all in the mixing and processing. Now if what you want is more diverse patterns, I recommend taking your melody section and trying to sing your drum and percussion parts over it. Then Lay down the pattern via your sequencer. You will be surprised at the various patterns you will form by trying this method.

I hope this helps you
