It's an interesting case study
the last audio recording is in public domain
Listener discretion is advised!!!
It starts with people arguing about if they could flee to Russia
But ends with the suicide
Remember that the cult collected damaged people with very limited options
And enticed the acquiescence of the semi-capable with positions of authority/control they would not find elsewhere
The book written by al & Jeanne mills
They left the cult before Guyana
But their account goes way back
Even in indianapolis,,, jones would claim there was no God -- and dare God to strike him dead right there on the spot
And nothing would happen, so the congregation was like "welp, there you go"
Much like nigerian Prince scammers,, he chased away the people who hesitated
He just fished for people ready to hop on board the crazy train
Intentionally selecting malleable ( or manipulative) people
Jeanne mills started a survivors group and might have been crazier and a bigger narcissistic paranoid nutjob than jones
Al and Jeanne mills and their daughter were murdered in a home invasion that has never been solved
25 years later their son was charged but ultimately not convicted
Again, people's temple was a wild assortment of damaged people who radicalized themselves to the incident
Jones had a hand on the wheel but other people had their feet on the accelerator
He was losing control - i seem to remember he was forced to start a second council, etc
They had done the obligatory reboots and were kind of at the end of the string
(My comments might not represent the prevailing view)
