Feels like a double edge sword. Hip-hop is the most popular genre in the world, we shouldn’t be surprised there’s a king of it and he’s labeled a pop star. Yes he is hip-hop but he is the pop brand of hip-hop. He’s been making likeable music for the masses for over a decade while checking off everything a pop record would require while (for the most part) rapping well on them. The fact that he’s lasted this long making this music brand of music is a truly a spectacle.

This pop brand of hip-hop I would say LL, Nelly and Missy Elliot all have made, just not to this extent of longevity. Once they all took a year or two off, they were (for the most part) done in the public’s eye. Drake lasted this long because while still making likeable hip-hop he evolved and used over genres to stay relevant and it worked. But for some, me personally, despite being in the same age range he’s garnered his music toward the youth with each new release and that just ain’t for me. But once again, it worked.

I don’t think any of what Mos said devalues the success of Drake either. Just think he said the quiet part out loud.

THIS HERE!

Dude's whole career was/is manufactured in conference rooms by execs and people who don’t even come from the places he steals all of his slang and "style" from. He's the perfect example of a pop artist who doesn't exist without the constant investment of major labels and corporate backing. It's really a joke. Nothing about that dude is Hip Hop.

He's Bruno Mars with cornrows and a beard.
Everything about Drake is hip hop.

Rappers in the past have adopted styles, slang, or identities that are not inherently Hip Hop or even Black i.e Mobster shyt from the Italians, druglord persona from Latin / South America, Asian culture like what Wu Tang has done, but those rappers and that era get a pass... but Drake doesn't?

Hip Hop has been heavily commodified for the last 30 years but we're talking about the "pop star" criticism in 2024?

^ none of what you said matters or is even applicable as an argument, nikkas simply don't like Drake because an outsider, Candian biracial Jew dominated rap for almost two decades.

That's it.
