Lets get this one thing about these subset of games out of the way. They don't even buy games, let alone play games they criticize about, nor do they buy or play the games they big up. They're tourist in the highest form. If this was last decade, you can argue that they do buy games they big up, but where are those games at nowadays?
I'll use Senran Kagura and Dead or Alive for example, last decade they put those two franchises on the pedestal mainly due to the fan service and less about the overall gameplay. With DOA it was worse and it cause an division within the fan base with those who fukk with the mainline titles (the fighter) and those who fukk with the spin off (DOAX), the latter voice got too big to where people thought that's how the fan base gets down and when it was time to support DOA6, the latter didn't want to buy the game as it was "too violent" and Team Ninja "cut back on the fan service" (ignoring the issues the game had going).
Now look at both franchises today, Senran Kagura is pretty much an dead series in the west and DOA is only alive due the fan base care more about their waifu, than the main line titles with DOA Venus Vacation Prism the only new title we've seen from the series in 6 years.
