MS's console turned into more of a streaming box over the years... the console offers great value for content (I literally use it solely for ESPN and NBA League Pass right now).

That's what seems to be where they're taking this. They're already in bed with ISPs allowing people to use their 360 as a content box for their cable providers.

I'm not seeing where the hype is for "gaming" when bringing up their vision though. For the past 2 years, they have been pushing Kinect and internet apps. Am I wrong?

Microsoft Studios - Leap is another, but I don't know where to place it geographically, I think America though.

Microsoft is going to make a one stop shop console. It has to be everything to everyone and to do that, it has to be 'future-proofed' with technology. As they did with Bioware and Mass Effect and Gears with Epic, they are going to have similar agreements with 3rd parties. Remember Ryse from Crytek? That being one. Who is going to go out initially and drop money on this? The core gamer? We are going to buy it, stunt and show off in front of our friends, then they will want to get it. Someone has to be the guinea pig, the person that lives on the bleeding edge of technology, that is where we gamers come in. How does this happen, by playing new experiences. That stuff will Microsoft and Samsung is a great start.

Yup and they just announced Lift Studios Via Harrison the Gawd

Microsoft executive Phil Harrison has spoken about his vision for a 21st century games studio. He describes it as "a studio that would not create retail products. A studio that would only create for the cloud, for the network, and for a multitude of devices.”

And that studio already exists. It's been set up in London over the last six months by Microsoft, and today that studio was finally given a name. It's called Lift and will be headed by former Rare employee (and Diddy Kong Racing designer) Lee Schuneman. The studio will for the time being operate out of Microsoft's Soho office, with a view to expanding in the near future.

"It's an incredible line-up of talent we are building," says Schuneman. "Joining me on this new and exciting talent is some of the best talent in the world from console, web 2.0, social, and mobile."

“
“What I would encourage you to think is that the disc is the start of a five-year relationship with the gamer," says Harrison.

Schuneman said that Lift is here to "deliver entertainment as a service. Where, when, and how you want it. We go beyond the box. Great games and experiences on tablets, mobiles and TVs. Powered by Microsoft and delivered through our cloud services. Made in London: an exciting, diverse city, full of energy, full of opportunities."

Schuneman echoed Harrison in opining that the traditional game release model, with massive up-front design and development costs, is changing. It's not yet an anachronism, but things are changing.

While major titles aren't going to disappear – there will always be a place for giants like Halo, of course – Lift and other Microsoft Studios will be adopting what Schuneman calls a "more nimble, streamlined development cycle."

Microsoft isn't forgetting about retail, Harrison was quick to add, but is trying to change the way we think about retail games. Usually we buy a game and 90% of the experience is on that disc. “What I would encourage you to think is that the disc is the start of a five-year relationship with the gamer," says Harrison. "We will try to refine and extend the product over many years. It is not mutually exclusive. We don’t have to stop doing disc products to be cloud-centric.

"The shift is from packaged goods to connected products," Harrison believes. "We will continue to support retail with our products for sure. But we are going to keep creating features that are enhanced and improved by the network."

Microsoft doesn't view the PC has a viable threat because it isn't,its great for the developers that they allow their games to be ported to PC.I expect to see 90% of pc games ported to the new xbox next gen as well.
Let me reiterate. I'm not saying that what Microsoft is doing is wrong. They're doing well so they're clearly making good decisions business-wise. But as a consumer, especially one that does have a PC, their "exclusives" are virtually meaningless. If we're talking about who has better exclusives right now, I don't have to put caveats around Sony's exclusives but with Microsoft, I do: "timed exclusives that may also be on PC are exclusives too". If they're not meaningless to you than more power to you.

that's kinda irrelevant. personally I've moved on to PC, but that has nothing to do with this conversation. my point was that if you do want to play new games (on consoles), you will be forced to upgrade, or not play any new games until you do. I don't think we're gonna see as much overlap with support like we did with previous generations

That's another reason why I'm not in a rush to buy a new console.

I haven't even started gaming on my rig that I just built.

Man, until they start droppin' these games it's a mute point.

All those companies under their belt, yet the only games they hype and drop every year are Gears and Halo. All the 3rd Party devs will continue to make games for both consoles because they like money.

Nah that was this:

I dont PC game neither does 90% of console gamers so it never has bothered me as a consumer. If anything as a PC gamer you should be worried about the Next MS console receiving 90+% of all PC games on the console instead of vice versa. Pretty soon all PC gamers will be able to brag about is "graphics" as long as the frame-rate of the consoles next gen remain respectable i see No reason for me to invest in a massive PC in the future. MS as a corporation wants to be able to game across multiple platforms which i think is a great idea as an consumer.

and Ahh Nice super tux kart a linux game :yayo: and the other game was Red Eclipse am i correct?

this generation been over years ago MS has been buying and creating studios since 2010 so you expect to see new franchises(outside of lococycle) start in 2013 on a outdated console when the other is releasing later this year? im sure some of the new games will still have xbox ports.

Yeah the other game is Red Eclipse. And Halo CE Anniversary was the last game.

There's nothing for me to "worry" about. XBox could get every single PC game (which would be impossible when you count all of the indies) and I would be ok with it and still play most of those games on PC. That's cool that 90% of consumers don't care about that shyt, but 100% of consumers can't get some of PS3's best exclusives elsewhere, so my point still stands.

Considering 70% of the PS3 Exclusive is garbage im sure people dont give a fukk about them(hence sales). If anything Sony needs to downsize their exclusives and put them shyts on PC .. before they end up on xbox :youngsabo:

And please tell me on PC where you can find these games

List of video games exclusives (seventh generation) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia'

Can your kids play Kinect Sesame Street TV :smugfavre:

or the tons of xbox arcade game exclusives where are they on PC can i play gunslinger or lococycle ? what about Ikaruga(this gen) :kat:. Hell xbla or xbl indie is leagues ahead of its psn equivalent.

what about CastleMiner :childplease:

PC apologist try to hard this battle is between gaming consoles.

WTF why do you keep moving the goal posts?

70% of exclusives are trash is at best, subjective. There's no reason for me to even approach this. If you feel that way, or even the masses feel that way, then ok. Not really my concern.

I didn't say that 360 exclusives are non-existent. Especially if we're talking about historically. But if we're talking about the trend in the last two years, games that are exclusive to PS3 as opposed to 360 have been less gimmicky AND they haven't been running their franchises into the ground. My previous examples stand: while Epic lost Cliffy B. and is releasing a fourth Gears of War, Naughty Dog is taking a break from Uncharted to release The Last of Us; Lionhead lost Peter Molyneux, released yet another Fable and meanwhile, a new Sly (a franchise that has been inactive for yours) is coming out; Rare lost most of their art staff and Sony opened a new studio and released PSABR.

CastleMiner? Oh shyt, I've been trolled. Never mind.

Yeah, I know (PCF is part of Epic). Further supports the mishandling of studios that make Microsoft exclusives. Bulletstorm was great and instead of doing more different shooters, they have PCF working on more of the same. I'm glad Fortnite is on the way but that's not exclusive (in fact, it's PC-first last we heard) so not really worth discussing in this context.

My gaming appetite has regressed severely over the past year.

I'd only dive in if there's some package deal of sorts that makes it worth it. But even then, I'm not in a rush to drop 400/500 on a new console when I haven't been playing much of anything lately.

yup, and both companies will continue to put games out on the current consoles anyways....ps2 was still getting madden till like 4 years ago i think lol
