I know what this thread is doing, but it's ignoring the fact that this WAS the "wait till next year" main event. Lost his Mania #1 contender spot at IYH Final Four, then lost to Bret at Mania, then lost the title match against Taker later that year after the Hart Foundation interfered.
Austin was not as hot in '97 as he was by '98 :mjlol: nikka was still a heel and it was still only a fringe of edgy fans cheering him for the most part. His RUmble win was a shock value misdirect. WACK defense, breh.

Absolutely terrible defense. They still haven't come back to say anything else about it :russ:

93 million miles above these devils
To be fair all of Austin's ready made feuds to have him in after he first became champion all got derailed:

HBK: Lost his smile and "retired" for a couple of years until his return
Bret Hart: After the screwjob he left for WCW
Brian Pillman: Tragically died before they could run back their feud
Owen Hart: Tragically died from that Blue Blazer foolish that Vince booked

Austin feuding with Dude Love made since with the logic that Mankind was too popular of a babyface and Cactus Jack wouldn't have made since kayfabe wise Cactus is pure chaos. Dude Love was the personality that had some history with Austin due to both of them being tag team champions together and is the personality that could be easily manipulated by the newly created "Mr. McMahon" character from Vince.

Owen died a year later. They could have easily ran that back but Austin didn't want to work with him after Owen was standoffish after that neck break incident at Summerslam. Lowkey Corporate stooge Owen Hart after Montreal could have gotten serious heat.

It’s crazy looking back at it. Rocky was either losing or getting beat up every single week and it did not hurt his status AT ALL. He was that good.
Rock would get the DOG shyt beat of him (either getting jumped, cheated, or even losing clean), come out the next night, cut one promo, and have the audience acting like the the nikka who just beat him was a bytch. Man was untouchable in the eyes of the fans.

No top babyface Superstar was booked WORSE than The Rock 99-00.

If Cody so great he should overcome :mjpls:
Feuding with Al Snow and getting his ass whooped by hhh and dx every week.

Watched that shyt years ago on the network like :skip: John Cena would never.

Took a pin to an x-pac spinning heel kick. :mjlol:

Rock lost to Al fukkING Snow?!?!?!, could you imagine the :scust::comeon: Austin or Triple H would’ve gave being pitched that:

From how bizarre The Rock was booked.. reality of that shyt was they REALLY DIDNT want Rock as a top guy.. That spot was tailor made for Austin and Triple H. Plus The Rock being black was breaking the color barrier. But the numbers didn't lie, he was over with the crowd, Austin went down, Taker went down, Foley went down. They had NO choice but to give him the ball and he scored touch down after touchdown in 2000

Two things...people paid to see the Rock..he had fans chanting Benoit Sucks, booing out the Undertaker, and having them shyt on DX and Michaels. So he could lose and get on the mic the next night and he was just epic with promos and content.....

99 too. He was unstoppable, they had to go away from the Rock And Sock Connection and put him right back in the main event after Summerslam. That's because the Rock segments were getting higher ratings than the Austin/Cripple H feud.

So glad y’all are privy to how terribly booked Rock was in his prime. Would get the absolute shyt beaten out of him week after week by DX and STILL had the fans in the palm of his hand. The GOAT :wow:
Damn near every Smackdown and every Raw would end with Rock (and sometimes, anyone who helped him) on the ground and HHH's music playing. Then the PPV would come.... and he'd lose.

And my lil ass would be right there Monday talmbout, "DX some hoes. No one better than The Great One :wow:"

Yeah WWE didn't want the guy they kept elevating as their top guy. LMAO
