Tyler Johnson eager to get going, but also will have to play Heat waiting game
When it comes to offseason priorities,
Tyler Johnson stands among the most significant for the
Miami Heat in light of the combination of his promise and his price point.
And yet, because of his unique situation, of standing with a nominal salary-cap hold but also possessing Early Bird rights as a restricted free agent, he also will have to be put on hold the longest of any of the Heat's primary free agents
The money will be there, a contract that likely will start in the $6 million range next season. But in order for the Heat to maximize their salary-cap flexibility, the 6-foot-4 combo guard will have to be one of the last -- if not the last -- signings the Heat complete this offseason using salary-cap space.
"I have a pretty good idea of how it works," Johnson said, allowing that the specifics of the "Gilbert Arenas provision" are also somewhat confusing.
Essentially, with the Heat allowed the right to match any outside offer provided the make the necessary $1.2 million qualifying offer between the end of the
NBA Finals and the end of June, and with Johnson effectively limited to a $6.2 million starting point for next season in a new contract, the only way to land elsewhere would be for a team to offer a heavily back-loaded deal, like the
Houston Rockets did in signing
Jeremy Lin away from the
New York Knicks in 2012, when Lin also was subjected to the "Arenas" provision.
Pat Riley offers his thoughts on Hassan Whiteside's free agency.
"Barring something crazy," Johnson said, "I can't foresee anything different for me."
The priority this offseason, Johnson said, is to get his body in shape for an entire season, after being limited to 36 games this season due to shoulder surgery. He said he does not anticipate the need for further procedures on his surgical left shoulder, but appreciates that is an issue that he will have to monitor, including during weight training.
Johnson participated with the Heat's summer-league team a year ago in an attempt to transition to point guard. That bid was cut short due to a fractured jaw when he was flattened by a midcourt screen.
Ira Winderman breaks down where the Heat roster stands, player-by-player, entering an offseason that involves more questions than answers.
Now Johnson said he appreciates that emerging as a more complete player is the focus under coach
Erik Spoelstra. Earlier this week, Heat President Pat Riley said that he considered the Heat's backcourt players to be mostly combo guards, including starting point guard Goran Dragic and backup point guard Josh Richardson.
"Those spots are interchangeable," Johnson said after emerging last among the players to clean out their lockers, in an interview recorded by the Heat's television wing. "There were a couple of times during the playoffs where, yeah, I was the two, but the play was designed for me to bring the ball up the court and get everybody organized. Those spots are so interchangeable with Spo that I don't even think it really matters."
What matters to Johnson is health. And by making it back for the latter stages of the playoffs, he believes it positions him for better days ahead in the NBA, most likely with the Heat.
"The next aim is to get my body right, to be able to sustain a whole 82-game season and then the playoffs," he said. "I thought I that I was making a lot of great strides at the beginning of the season and I'm going to continue to improve on, obviously, those things as far as ballhandling, finishing at the basket. I think that my biggest strides are going to be mentally and getting my body right."
Reunion limitations
According to NBA rules, the Heat would be allowed to re-sign
Mario Chalmers this offseason during free agency, despite being dealt last season from the Heat. However, because they were dealt with time left on their contracts beyond this season, the Heat could not offer a free-agent contract to
James Ennis until November and to
Jarnell Stokes until February.
The Heat are allowed to invite Stokes and/or Ennis to join their summer-league team, but then could not retain them for the start of the season
