I played this album a month ago. I actually liked it when it dropped and still do. Hold the Heater is forgettable and I can't take the extra 2mins on Miracle, but an overall good album. It's a solid 4. BUT I will agree and say that there aren't really any overpowering standout tracks. The best tracks to me are Ruckus, Felt, Never Let Go, Necklace and I like Ron O'Neal but not the hook.

It got more hate than it deserved, and it's easily better than most of their solos.

You know what? I don't think it got more hate than it deserved. I think it's disjointed and you can tell the chemistry isn't there on all songs. Judged by pits and pieces it's fine but as a whole project it's just not up to wu standards. Whether fair or not, they're judged by a different standard but that's something they've earned. It's the gift and the curse

Masta Killa made a good point about this album recently.

He said that at the time of recording nobody really felt where Rza was taking it, but then when Jay dropped 4:44 some members suddenly started giving Rza props for dropping a "grown man" Wu album.

:francis: So they realized what rza realized in that they’re a bunch of 40 year old men with kids and they can’t make the same music they made in their 20s?

This is what I said then. It's a mature Wu album, and a pretty solid one. A couple of missteps but overall, good entry in their saga

I feel bad for RZA :snoop: If they woulda put the right fukkin energy into it shyt woulda translated to the fans and the album woulda been recieved right. Hardheaded fukkin nikkas. Minus Method Man.

I just wan say, i been on a serious wu kick for a minute so ive been going over their catalog.

This album really got shyt on when it wasnt nearly as bad as I thought after all these years. While the lightness of the production took me out of the album, imo this album was just wutangs celebration on conquering the game. Its sound is almost like an outkast album. Which is NOT what wu fans want from wu but I understand why rza went this direction because it was the one part of the game he didnt conquer. Hes flirted with this beat style before, mostly in 2001 with bulletproof wallets, digital bullet and iron flag. But never taken it to this level.

I first started appreciating this album listening to the project strum remix version which made me appreciate it lyrically for what it is. The guys hadnt been so cohesive in a long time at this point. Cappadonna, Masta Killa Ugod GZA Meth and Rae all have serious verses on this album. Not that the other guys didny but i was suprised how much I loved their verses on the remix album. 8 diagrams def felt more hap hazard in its construction even if I feel today the original 8 Diagrams to be a 4.5 mic album and is probably my fav album of the late 2000s by a lot.

We should have known when wu massacre dropped and Our Dreams prod by rza was so clean and “pretty” sounding, where rza was gonna take this album. And honestly im not mad at it after all these years.

Best songs:

Imo, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the following tracks

Ruckus in B Minor 4.5/5

Crushed Egos 4.25/5

Pioneer The Frontier 4.25/5

Necklace 4/5

A Better Tomorrow II 5/5

Family Reunion 4/5

Already 1/2 of the album is dope. All these songs are FINE. ABT2 is the standout to me being a classic song imo. The rest are all bangers.

Issues tracks:

Miracle 4.25/5

also, in that class ; i to this day love miracle. The songbis representitive of godfather 3 style opera hit; hence the singing and mastakilla/rae verses. The synth clash at end with ghost dont even bother me. The beat is the best one theyve rocked on to this very day; I like this song and still find it fire. Hook got .75 took off bat. This would be a 5/5 wu song if they just got an old singer.

So thats 6/15

Keep watch: 3.75/5

the hook does not ruin the song. So many people cried about this song. At worst its a aversge joint and I quite like the beat and the verses. I think its a 3.5/5 joint at very least.

Preachers Daughter: 3.5/5

When i first heard this song I HATED IT. I havent listened to it in 10 years. I was suprised how much I enjoyed it. Again i relate this to outkast. This sounds like some idlewild shyt. Which makes me laugh cause i know if outkast rhymed on this same song everything the same people would go nuts over it but because its wutang it gets blown outta perportion. It sounds like wu having fun on it which I haveny personallu heard in years so it makes me laugh. I dont hate the track at all. Ghost actually kills it which struck me this time. Madta killa drops a childs play esque verse. I dont love it. Dont hate it but appreciate it now when I couldnt then. 3.5/5

9/15 tracks 3.5 or better off rip.

Following tracks I neither loved not hated and found them to be average. The strum remix of felt, 40th street black and mistaken identitu made me appreciate those songs more for what they are. I like those versions more than rzas but still rate most of these as average to good

Felt - 3.25/5 - i like the strum remix more but this version never bothered me.

40th street black - 3/5 - LOVE the strum remix but again this one dont bother me too much. What I dont like about it is weighed against what I do which is more than not.

Mistaken identity - 2.75 - i like the changeup over ugods part the best. Strum remix gives it edge it prolly needs. Dont hate it again its average at worst. Ive heard worst wu songs.

Hold the heater - 2.5/5 - beat isnt anything special. Guys just rhyming all over the place. Filler.

Ron oneil - 3/5 - one of the more maligned tracks. again i like more about it than I dont. Groove works more than some other tracks.

Never let go - 3.5/5 - i like this track, begining samplw is sick and the instrumentation is dope. Strum remix is dope cause he samples the sick intro to make a beat thats very wu but original is dope as well.

Final tally

Ruckus in B Minor 4.5

Felt 3.25

40th street black 3

Mistaken Identity 2.75

Hold the heater 2.5

Crushed egos 4.25

Keep watch 3.75

Miracle 4.25

Preachers daughter 3.5

Pioneer the frontier 4.25

Necklace 4

Ron oneil 3

A better tomorrow 5

Never let go 3.5

Wu tang reunion 4

Average: 55.5/75 = .74 = 3.7

Id give it 3.5 mics for sure just off beung 20 years 50+ albums in and dripping this. Maybe 3 mics with my stan glasses off. Its not any worse than 3 mics. Mostly songs lose while points for generic “modern” hooks.

And just for my ratings on wu album

36 - 5

Forever - 5

8 Diagrams (original) - 4.5

The W - 4

Iron Flag - 3.5

A better Tomorrow 3 - 3.5

Saga Continues 3.5

Also

Also, like I said I consider the 2010s to be like Wu’s celebration run. They have done a lot of tracks in this style since that really fill out the project.
