It’s really been twenty years for the
Wu-Tang Clan. Longer actually — when you add up all the years that RZA, GZA, ODB, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, U-God, Masta Killa, Method Man, Ghostfastface Killah, and Cappadonna spent honing their skills in Shaolin (and Brooklyn). Throughout their expansive careers,
the clan had their fair share of heartbreaks and rocky moments, but together like Voltron they’ve finally completed the 20th anniversary group album and landed back on the same page of the Wu-Tang saga. And it’s all in the name of
A Better Tomorrow.

“I will say that you will hear some maturity in our thinking process,” explains RZA at the NYC listening for
A Better Tomorrow. “It’s a very lyrical album. A lot of stories and vignettes of stories you’ll hear, and I think you’ll get a taste of New York flavor.”
The newly released
“Ruckus In B Minor” sets the tone of the album with the late ODB’s adlibs giving
the crew the holy spirit. RZA gave away the title to another song dubbed “Felt” — because as he says “we don’t give a f*ck how muthaf*ckas feel anymore.” The Kung Fu samples are back, eerie noises morphed into beats, and of course the lyrics. Much like
Wu-Tang Forever, the clan delivers songs with social commentary but without the overly preachy tones.
“The third song is called “40th Street Black (We Will Fight),” and that’s a song that was named after an old 70’s film,” says RZA. “Also, a song that’s meant to inspire important events or energy. We come together as one — we fight for one.”
Fans wanting that classic hardcore Wu sound won’t be disappointed either. There’s plenty of wild crime stories and ’70s Soul inspired production on the 15-song project. I can only remember a few songs that were lingering in the
Datedzone. RZA’s clever flip of
“Son Of A Preacher Man” will catch some listeners. “Hold The Heater,” “Necklace” and “Never Let Go” were also stand outs in my opinion.
“It ended with “Family Reunion” because we feel Wu-Tang comes together — whether it’s us or our fans or people that ever had any inspiration from Wu-Tang — it’s a family reunion. We’re a rare breed on the planet Earth, ” RZA continues. “I think over the years, I’ve come to realize that the people that you attract or attract you are somewhat part of your family because it’s a mind set — it’s a mindframe.”
