Devante was a beast, but that last album wasn't in his wheelhouse. The first album which was more churchy, was dominated by Devante. The 2nd joint had the Missy/Timbo input and it reflected in the musical tastes and trademarks of the pair. The 3rd album where the entire group was drunk with fame and high on drugs was pretty much Timbo's sound. You can literally hear their voices on the tracks on both albums. It dont take away from Devantes genius, he did influence their style, but that drum and bass shyt that timbo copped from England was far from the church based stuff that Devante put his foot in

Its pretty simple. Devante handled the keys n melody. Timbo handled the bounce.

No More Pain has devante all over it. Timb has never been nice on the boards like that. His forte was always drums.

Im pretty sure Missy prolly had a bigger role in their 3rd album than Timbaland.

why devante use violence?

it was probably more of a control thing. not saying that he was being some crazy monster or anything but he did have considerable influence over the artists in Da Bassment Crew back in those days since hr was the one with more money and connections in the industry than they did. This was before all of them blew up. But after Missy made a name for herself on that Gina Thompson joint, her and Timbo left and Ginuwine took of with them. Ginuwine got his solo deal and Missy/Timbo worked their asses off on that Aaliyah album.

Later, Missy/Timbo formed their own crew with some spare parts from Da Bassment Crew, and then Playa/Static, Tweet got some shine alongside Nicole Wray, who Missy brought on later

Yea i can see that. Devante cant produce a up tempo song to save his life. I think Tim did handle specific elements, but your right about Missy, on that last album you can hear her voice on damn near every track......even on the intro for Get on up which sounds like Timbo helped with

rumor has it that suge's goons broke in his crib and gang-raped him. and he lost his mind after that.

thats the reason why he dissappeared. not this revisionist "he needed timbo & missy" bullchit that dudes in here spewing.

devante makes kc & jojo look clean cut. i remember when devante popped up out of oblivion at the 1st BET awards. he looked extremely awful. this was before kc & jojo went to chit.

I remember seeing that, I knew he was going through something but just didn't know what.

Missy worked her ass off behind the scenes with the writing and vocals on those later Jodeci records, and real talk, that R&B shyt most definitely her lane. I can appreciate doing that instead of rapping but theres no way she would popped off as an R&B singer looking like an eccentric member of Da Brat's dyke crew. In the mid/late 90s, she woulda been competing against people like Toni Braxton and her own artist, Aaliyah. As a rapper, she had a chance to carve her own lane and kinda be a female version of a 90s Busta Rhymes with the crazy outfits, videos, which only Busta was doing back then.

Even tho Timbo is light years ahead of DeVante, he wont shyt on the person who first brought them all together and showed them the game, even if there were some low moments. Fact of the matter is that alot of up and coming producers are ghosting for bigger producers who take the credit. Could you imagine being in the Hittmen when Bad Boy was poppin and having Puff eat all that publishing offa you. Puff had these cats sampling old school artists (big drain on your publishing/royalties) and then breathing on the track and getting producer/co-producer credits.

And who knows, maybe if Tim/Missy, etc stayed with DeVante, that woulda held them back, but DeVante messed it up for himself. And by the time Missy was getting more and more placements to do a vocal or write a track, it was flat out easy to walk away and get her own shyt poppin. Timbo had that sound and those drums that no one had and him and Missy ate well off it. shyt, even Magoo got to eat just by being down with them.

Cant blame Suge on this one, in fact, he got them and Mary J. out of some shytty deals back when they were popping. But all of them Jodeci cats were heavy into drinking/drugs in some way, shape or form and that played a big part into it. Dudes were living that bad boys of R&B shyt and that included being into drugs. KCi and Jojo were (at the time) the only salvageable parts of the group and they had a lil success after Jodeci, but K-Ci doing drugs, also, is not some big secret.

They literally dropped the ball on their careers at the wrong time, considering that DeVante had Missy, Timbo, Playa and Ginuwine (and a couple others) under his umbrella. And while no one knew them back them, Missy, Timbo and Static alone were valuable enough where they couldve supplied Jodeci with songs and beats. But DeVante shytted on them hardbody, used violence in many cases, had Timbo ghostproducing (i.e. 2Pac's "No More Pain") and wasnt breaking bread properly.

and dont forget that stevie j was down with them too. he did akot of production for and with devante. stevie j is/was mad talented on the boards
