Cole is a dope rapper, anyone trippin’ on his actual RAPPING ability being disingenuous but he has been a safe rapper the past decade and has no classic albums or really overall memorable albums.

Even some of his biggest songs aren’t that big for the level he gets put on with Drake and Kendrick. Travis Scott not a spitter like that but he makes overall better music and has much better albums than J Cole. And it’s not even close

Cole's female audience is what helps him get over most other rappers, success and longevity wise. Just like Wale. Wale's style kinda leans too much into the female appeal though, so that's probably why he's not as big.

Cole is thematically more diverse and more talented than a lot of rappers when it comes to putting a cohesive album together while still having big hits that don't sound out of place. He's just a more conscious Drake at the end of the day.

see this is why I go so hard against Cole sometimes.

Yall use all this intangible bullshyt to excuse the one thing that matters

Fuk with who you fuk with, it doesn't matter if Rapper A can spit a better 16 than Rapper B if you like both artists imo.

Yall be bent out of shape over someone's opinion like you're gonna change their mind. Yes, Cole is in folks' Top 10...now what?

Cole is simply lucky to come out first under Hov and then in an era where lyricists are few and far. If he came out a decade earlier he'd be a Rawkus rapper. Due to his era all the kids who were in high school or college during his run hold him in super high regard but he's always been artistically mid bars aside. KDot has lapped him again and again when it comes to creative concepts and albums. Drake crushes him when it comes to commercial success. He is perpetually #3 behind those 2 and both the guys previously mentioned at least have an argument for why they should be in anyone's top 15/10/5 due to the things they have contributed to the rap game. What has J. Cole truly brought to the game musically? He's a good rapper that gets away with B to B+ material being graded as A+ because his fanbase is too young to truly compare and contextualize the greats of other eras. Also I'm sure Jay Z has a stake in him being lauded because he can say "Hey I gave the world J. Cole" so he's always going to get graded highly by the machine.

If the following artists got to debut under the same circumstance as Cole they'd be be way bigger than him:

Tyler
Mac Miller
Wale
Krit
Joey Bada$$

I still think something fishy on how
Dre- k dot
Jay- Cole
Wayne- Drake
Ye- Sean

All just happened to get four of the biggest stars in that era. All very safe anti “50 cent” type rappers

Edit
Sticking with the thread hell no J Cole top 10. He not top 50 imo
one is not like the others

as far as JCole goes. I thinks he’s very overrated in the sense that people rank him higher than his actual output deserves

he can rap he can make good music blah blah blah
but majority of his album are the actual equivalent to:beli:

i’d barely put him top10 from 2010 on

Wale is a better rapper than like 90% of artists living or dead

I think Ye would see Travis as his protégé more than Sean. Sean was already crying about not getting enough attention when he was still dropping the finally famous tapes.
