This was one of the biggest box office FLOPS In Thanksgiving History. 30 million dollar budget that only made 4 million dollars. Spike is officiallly done after that. This was actually a good film, even if you saw the original. Still has that mysterious air about it. Is this the type of film that should have had a cac's name attached to it for it to be successful. Did the Spike Lee association damn this film before it could even take off.

Wouldn't have mattered either way. Justin Lin and Steven Spielberg were both supposed to direct it before Spike, the internet reacted the exact same way. Most people just didn't want it remade, period.

This. No matter who did it, it was gonna receive backlash...some cult classics must not be remade

Spike's name probably didn't help...

....but the movie was terrible, and REALLY terrible if you were familiar with the original.

It did everything worse.

I didn't think the movie was terrible per se but it certainly lacked the style of the original so in that sense I understand why people had negative responses to it. I didn't feel like a Spike Lee film either.. it just felt like your typical, average studio mystery/thriller for 3/4 of the movie with Spike Lee on board as a director for hire. Reading interviews around when the movie came out, it sounded like the studio altered the final product in some ways, without the consent of Spike.

It's really just puzzling why this movie was made at all.. the movie opened up in very few theaters on a very limited run with little to no marketing. I don't understand why a studio would shell out cash to remake an extremely popular foreign film.. and then when its time for the movie to actually come out, start to go :whoa: and send it out to die.

movie was good, if u think its terrible then obviously you're a stan of the original.....the only thing it really did wrong was the villain was too over the top everything else was pretty good....to answer the question tho no it wouldnt have been any different whether spike was behind it or not....for one the ppl who loves the original didnt want it touched and wouldnt give it a chance right out the gate, secondly not many ppl even know about the original so they didnt know wat they were in store for story wise and lastly the marketing was absolutely awful for it (that may actually have been because spike was behind it)

Now I've only seen select scenes from the original, if I were to base my opinion on either film on Spikes version I would probably say that it was an overrated experience all around. Maybe I had high expectations from the hype but it was underwhelming.
