Trump 'worked' because as much as he spouted populist rhetoric, drain the swamp, he very much kept establishment and corporate business at the top of the priority. He deregulated, he cut taxes for the elites, he installed corporate and establishment judges. He used right wing populism to get in power, but used it primarily to protect the swamp and everything he railed against. He was never a real threat to the establishment

A leftist version of him - brash, bold, giving zero fukks and breaking norms, creating new ones that moved the needle for leftist policies would get cut down so fast. Would make the media's treatment of Bernie look soft
We’ve already had that. It was Obama but from a liberal view. The question should be could the Democratic Party become a leftist version of the Republicans

Yes and No. I think it would definitely garner more excitement from younger voters and voters generally tired of the GOP doing whatever it wants.

But as has been mentioned, Dempublicans are typically hurt by things like this. @Ed MOTHEREFFING G brought up Al Franken, I myself thought of that one candidate from ‘08 (update edit: Howard Dean in ‘04) I can’t remember his exact name but I remember he was polling well and suddenly dropped after being a little too excited on stage. Dave Chappelle even did the “Beeyaw!” Skit making fun of him.

If a Dem can’t even get mildly hype, then ain’t no way they gon have the flexibility to tell a GQP opponent to go fukk themselves and call them funny names. Lowkey, without that con artist Obama the Dempublicans are swagless as fukk.

Ahhhh, I couldn’t even remember if it was 04 or 08. All I remembered was that his name was Howard. But if a Dem candidate can’t even show that level of personality (however corny) then I can’t see a candidate pulling a Leftist Trump.

Not to mention, a Left Trump might be a tad too radical for a country still shaped by the Cold War and fears of Socialism.

No because their moral mishaps actually do sink them unlike their counterparts. Al Franken is the prime example.

Still could work if they just own it rather than giving meek apologies and hoping for forgiveness.

Anyone with skeletons should get out in front of them and just say you're going to hear things about me and they are probably all true. I'm not going to answer questions on any of them :yeshrug:

It’s just too much of a flash in the pan for it to happen imo. That’s like if somebody like The Rock actually got into politics and ran on Bernie’s platform. Calling Rethugs jabroni’s and tellin em it doesn’t matter what their policy is….:skip:

I think the biggest hurdle to something like that is the DNC actively stifling that type of candidate because they are somewhat risk adverse and unwilling to gamble on a volatile character. There is also a clear hierarchy and system where people "should pay their dues" to the party and that type of candidate is likely to be a lone wolf independent type
