Yup if not for city jobs...the Irish and Italians in just about any city would have had poverty rates similar to that of blacks.
As a matter of fact, I'll go so far to say that many blacks are generationally poor in inner cities because the Irish and Italians kept them out of those jobs.
I always thought that one of the worst things to happen to this country was the influx of white immigrants in the 1900s...they shoved blacks right to the bottom in the labor force. With the Irish, Italians, Poles etc...Municipalities could afford to discriminate against hiring blacks because they could just hire poor immigrant whites over them, plus they forced blacks to have limited mobility in their own cities

The disproportionate number of black people in the public sector is one of the main things driving the Republican effort to shrink government.

A job is a job. They have good unions, so no reason to knock it.You stay long enough and you make bank.
I feel a way seeing a majority of package delivery people being black. If they are young I can understand, but seeing a dude 40+ being a bike messenger kinda sucks.
But Civil Service positions provide good benefits and retirement. They want blacks out of those jobs so their cac cronies can have them. If not eliminate them all together.
When Republicans cry about "Big Government" they never mean the bloated Dept of Defense budget.
They usually mean agencies like the Post Office and you know who works those jobs.
