nothing is touching the character development, the plot, the acting, the writing, and the payoffs

spoilers of course:

- that fukking nailgun almost bringing down marlo's entire empire (great and subtle writing)
- mike putting a hit on his own dad
- herc destroying randy's life
- prezbo becoming a likeable character
- bodie's fall
- the criminals being one step ahead of smart cops (how many shows got smart cops and smart criminals)... & the payoff when lester finally puts it all together
- the rise of marlo and the co-op
- almost every scene omar was in (robbing marlo, staying alive in jail, robbing the entire shipment)

and I'm leaving out a bunch of stuff, but every episode was piff
how many shows actually develop characters (no cliched good guys or bad guys or plot device characters), plan out their storylines, and successfully make villans into heros and vise versa

too bad they fukked it up in season 5 :sadbron:

4 > 1 = 3 > 2 >>>>>> 5
Seasons 1 & 2 will always be my favorite...Season 4 was good (they all were except Season 5)..but is overrated among Wire stans

but why no love for season 2. i thought it was amazing and it really set a lot of the later seasons up.

Nobody will admit it...but the main reason why Season 2 gets shytted on by a lot of cats is because the main storylines revolved around white people. Even though the writing in that season and the police work was :whew:

I don't know if it's because there was a lot of white cast members, but moreso that it was like "who the fukk are all these people? I don't care about these people, I want to see everyone I grew to like from S1."

The Barksdale plot just became very secondary and it threw people for a loop. As the show progressed and displayed different themes for each season I think people appreciated S2 more. But I think S2 would be a lot less of a black sheep season if it came after at least 2 seasons, where such a huge shift in characters wouldn't be as jarring.

And honestly I had no idea so many people didn't like S5 until reading this thread. At the time me and everyone I knew really enjoyed it. I thought it tied things up nicely, and I thought the ending was appropriate.

What don't people like about S5? Is it that they made up the serial killer? Or the news room stuff?

Season 5 was rushed and you could tell big time by the writing, storylines, and acting. Plus the newspaper plot was :flabbynsick:

It hurts but I gotta run with season 4.

The way I see it.

Plot: Season 4>>>3

Dialogue: Season 3>>>>4

The fall of Avon and Stringer had some of the best dialogue ever written. I will always stand by that

Just finished season 1 again, and looking back on it. Marlo crew was on a whole different level from Avon crew. Well trained, disciplined, intelligent. Always was one step ahead.

i never disliked a character more on the Wire than i did that little fakkit Randy.
something about that kid was just annoying..Namond was supposed to be annoying but Randy :pacspit: i even had more sympathy for Ziggy Sobotka.

:whoa: Ziggy might be the most annoying character in tv history

:childplease: Avon was running shyt for years, you think they just started taking over shyt episode 1, they already built they empire by then, and was so smooth with it no one even knew about it.. which is what the whole series was started on!

Marlo barely had shyt for awhile

Avon was in his early 30s and had just become king not long before the series started (about 1 year). Marlo took over the entire city of baltimore, east & west in 2-3 years in his mid 20s.

Taking over an entire city in your 20s while putting fear in the heart of every other drug dealer >>>> Sloppy ass work that avon was doing in season 1

Also you can look at how Marlo was able to take care of Omar, where as avon couldn't

The way Joe went down was so damn comical when you think about it.."shyt..let's proposition?" and then the killers come in and he closes his eyes not even trying to fight:laugh:
