No, it isn't. How old are you, 80? You sound out of touch as hell. The biggest shows, in terms of viewers/critical acclaim from the last 10+ years have all featured a ton of unlikeable characters....if not unlikeable/unsympathetic main characters.
"The Sopranos", "Mad Men", "Dexter", "The Walking Dead", "Breaking Bad", "Boardwalk Empire", "House of Cards", "Homeland", "Game of Thrones", etc.
Womanizing ad execs, murderous mob bosses, serial killers, ruthless politicians, terrorists, drug lords, etc.
If you haven't turned your TV on in 20 years I could maybe understand this being a culture shock. This trend has been going on a long, long time.
Viewers are not so simple minded nowadays that they need to like characters to like a show.
