OP, I remember when both Busta and Tupac came out dressed like that and thinking they were gay were the furthest things from my mind.

In most cases, you can’t really use current society standards to judge the past.

I think the androgyny was influenced by rock stars of the 70’s and early 80’s who used crossing gender lines as being edgy. I’m thinking people like David Bowie, Jimi Hendix, Mick Jagger. Hell, even Elvis, which is probably where it comes from. Many of these folks were before my time but I don’t get the impression that it was ever a question of their sexuality, with few exceptions (Little Richard), like it would be today.
