In 2008, when Dr. Dre was interviewed and asked by Vibe Magazine if he saw The Chronic as "his defining effort", he said:

"I don’t feel like I’ve made my best record yet. The Marshall Mathers LP got the closest, but I don’t feel like I’ve hit that thing just 100 percent perfect, from the first note to the last note. I always use Quincy Jones as an example– he didn’t make his biggest record until he was 50 and he started when he was 14. So I feel like I have a lot of room to get that thing done." - Dr. Dre

Dre thinks MMLP is the "closest" he got? According to Wikipedia, Dre only made 8 beats for that album, and it's 18 tracks long. I can't really remember a lot of those beats, and I am not about to go listen to Marshall whine over them to find out.

And @Art Barr is making me feel guilty for being a Dre fan. I do find a lot of the lyrics on his projects repugnant but I honestly fw Dre for the music. :yeshrug:

The beats on Compton were awesome. It just felt kind of rushed and slapped together... but on the other hand, I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of stuff on Compton might've come from his Detox vaults. Dre said it was "inspired" by the S.O.C. film, but since when has Dre announced and put out a project that quickly? :ohhh:

THE MOST OUTTER REACHES OF THE COSMOS
it was wayyyy more g-funk in 90-91 than it was in 92..

shock g - sex packets..

spice 1 had the bay version

quik jus transferred the red tape over n cleaned up the gang shyt n police name dropping he did on the red tape...to quik is the name

then nwa dropped the last album....which was damn near perfection

Your missing what I’m saying…..Yeah I get allll of that, but none of those people or they’re music and I mean,NO ONE NOR THEY’RE MUSIC OR ALBUM ,Popularized and influenced the G funk sound more than that Chronic Album….Period! Spice 1,Quik,Shock G and anybody u can think of didn’t do what Dr.Dre did with that Chronic album and the g funk sound… shyt became mainstream because of the Chronic my nikka! What ur speaking on is regional, but I’m talking nationwide….That’s what the Chronic did for the g funk era! Them nikkaz you mentioned may have had that shyt on they’re albums before the Chronic, but the Chronic opened the flood gates to the utilization of that shyt….nikkaz had to go back to the studio and change they shyt because of the Chronic……Chronic changed the sound of HipHop,but after all we are talking about something Dr.Dre created, the best producer in HipHop,so stop fukking around and stop it with the extra bullshyt…..nikka! :comeon:

I prefer The Chronic... but I feel ya

Dre never got "out there" like this again. Tracks 2, 3, 11, and 16 are on some crazy Herbie Hancock/psychedelic/dissociated/hellride ish. ESPECIALLY tracks 3 and 16.

Track 16

Track 3 - This beat is wild. WTF is going on with those "HIIIIIIIIIIIII-YA!" karate chop sounds in the background? That weird fukkin harpsichord run towards the end of the loop? Beating RZA to the iconic Liquid Swords sample 4 years early?

I love the beats on this album. You can tell this is the time period where Dre started getting high. Straight Outta Compton might be more iconic, but this and The Chronic are what I'll be bumpin in the nursing home.

:flabbynsick:

shyt gets no harder than than Approach To Danger.…track wise and all of the little intricate additives on this song….MC REN is a lyrical assassin on [Approach] and Eazy on RNDD…The one and only, with out a doubt recognizable voice and closer of the song! Arrangement Perfected!:banderas:

I feel like Death Certificate is the best west coast album ever. But none of the albums listed on this thread shifted things the way the Chronic did. I mean just look at the fact that Snoop was already a star before his debut even dropped

The quality of the chronic.
That the chronic is rewarded for is by audiophiles.
It is rewarded by fake critics and snob audiophiles for its sonic clarity and engineering/mixing.
Plus it is a prison industrial economy gateway album.
Which completely basks in the critic's industry penchant.
to reward anything that perpetrates the tricknology featured in birth of a nation.

Rap since the mca way and ol school way of thought.
Was already formulated off funk breaks.
since its mainstream adoption by fans since sugar hill.

You are speaking and using verbiage from a prison industrial and communication act gateway fan manner.

In real time snoop was available in the market place for close to a quarter.
To half a year.
Before the remix of deep cover was unveiled.
to the main stream public via the communicatuons act and change in daytime radio.

Check it out Art Barr, call it prison industrialization and ill advised communication gateway or whatever suits you! I know where the music and sound originated from, but I’m not talking about that and I am a fan of this music and I don’t feel any type of way about liking it,no matter what you or anybody in this thread has to say about it.I’m more into the music side of HipHop anyway, rather than what’s being said unless that certain rapper is displaying some serious emceeing skills! You should be talking that shyt to these youngins who have no HipHop knowledge or respect its history! It’s only opinions on the music until we make it personal, but if there are facts contained within those musical opinions, then to me,any nikka in here talking against what’s the truth is just talking shyt to save face and to me that’s a bytch azz nikka and that tends to happen in a lot of these threads, but I will never let a sucka duck azz nikka make it. Never!

Still speaking from a prison industrial economy gateway fan perspective.
Far from a hiphop culture based perspective.

If you want to showcase some great understanding of the album.

Make a culture based review of the record.
Yet you will not and continue to deflect.
Plus speak like a prison industrial economy gateway fan.
