The album was done, but Matty C felt like it could be taken to the next level.

So he got in touch with Q-Tip and asked if he could come in and make some changes. So Tip came in and re-produced the album and mixed the whole album too. For the tracks that Havoc did, Tip changed the drums and used his own kit and reprogrammed everything to make the beats bigger. The OG version didn't sound like what we hear today. Tip really made that joint a masterpiece.
Yup...according to Matty C, only songs Tip didn't touch were Shook Ones, Cradle to the Grave, and QU-Hectic. Hectic was one of the last songs made on the album

Matty C was also the reason Eye for an Eye sounds the way it does too. The OG is a straight up loop of the Al Green song, basically the same beat as Shootouts from It Was Written. But Matt said there was no way they were gonna be able to clear an Al Green sample with their budget, so Havoc chopped the same sample up til it was unrecognizable lmao

There was a Q-Tip interview with Stretch & Bobbito in mid-96 that suggested he helped out a little on Hell On Earth, too.

Shook Ones' snares and kicks are Tip's too.

He just replaced Hav's drum sounds and threw in his own. That's why it's called "Part Two". The version that was originally on the album went through mad changes, but still wasn't working. "QU Hectic" was all Tip drums too. Just produced by Havoc.

But the OG versions of the songs and the way they came out after Tip redid them, was really night and day. The Infamous ain't classic without The Abstract. Havoc got a chance to be around three legends as a kid, and learn. Tip, Premier and Large Pro.

Hmm, I think Tip said Shook Ones Pt. 2 was already out when he got put on the album. I could be wrong though.

They recorded the song before he came on, but he came in and mixed it and mastered the drums for the album.

Most of the album was either already recorded or started on. But he came in and just tweaked them sonically to take the records to the next level. I remember hearing the OG "Survival of the Fittest" and then hearing how Tip changed it. It was crazy. Like two different songs.

Yup...and Tip's mixing made a difference on even his own songs. Tip said the studio engineer mixed the clean version of Give up the Goods, and well...

Exact same samples and drum sounds but the shyt might as well be a different beat because of how poorly it's mixed. Whereas the album version is my personal GOAT beat

Tip's still pissed about the clean mix to this day :lolbron:

:ohhh:..:ohhh:.... I guess this makes sense cause Hav would've been late teens early 20's then.... cause the way the album sounds... as you said it sounds "bigger" has that Dr. Dre "warmth" to it..... amd to get that only comes from experience. Something Tip would'be had by then...... enlightening lil story... :obama:

A reviewer could suggest 5 mics, but it had to go to committee after the "no 5" rule. Shorty had to fight to get Illmatic that 5.

This is true.

One person didn't determine the amount of mics an album would get. They had to go back to re-review some sh*t because they said past members of the staff messed up certain committee votes.
