Why is the NBA getting all this criticism about the game and the TV networks get off scot-free?

One of the things that strikes me about discussing the old days of the NBA is how many fans miss the NBA on NBC.
It makes sense. The game had big stars. You had the iconic Roundball Rock theme song.

But who really gets the credit for that? Was it the league, David Stern, or was it NBC itself?

In my mind, NBC was the driving force behind its success because of their theme song. Because of their production value. Because of their broadcast teams. Because of the narratives they would set up before games and each playoff series. This is all stuff that NBC was responsible for and delivered on.

David Stern wasn't creating these intros:

That wasn't a big playoff game. That was a random Saturday. But it put fans on notice and created interest.
Credit to NBC.

So it strikes me that when this is missing from the game, and fans seem dissatisfied with how the game is being marketed and its players promoted...and somehow the blame falls on the NBA and NOT on TNT, ESPN, TBS, etc...

I'm not sure I understand this.
TV Networks are paying billions of dollars for the rights to broadcast these games.

Shouldn't they be responsible for promoting and elevating their product?

Yes abc/espn sucks and somewhat has to do with the 2020’s being the WOAT era

Back then you had nba on nbc broadcasts but more importantly jordan,shaq/penny,Barkley,Hakeem etc in 3 games every weekend with iconic match ups, rivalries and skills being displayed.

Now load management with key players always out + 80 threes spammed by both teams :unimpressed:

Because Silver could help solve a lot of these problems if he really wanted to do so, but is too bytchmade to do anything about it.

We've seen many times before of the NFL putting their foot in TV networks necks to inspire change or put them in place.
How?

This is my question. All these guys saying Silver could fix it, but don't tell us how he could fix it.

Because whether games come on NBC or not the sport is still dumbed down to the absolute floor with high scores and no defense. The league did that nobody made them. And you'd still have Shaq, Charles, SAS, Kendrick, Windhorst, type buffoons thinking people tune in to watch them more than the product

The leagues control what and how the nitwits talk publicly about the sport, which is why you don't have Charles Barkleys running around NFL shows asking the viewers "what team he play for", doesn't happen for baseball either. Blame the networks too if you want but it falls on the league at the end of the day

The NBA moving to NBC is what ruined the game. It started the player dikk riding.

If Shaq and Charles are being fools on tv....that's a tv problem.

You might have a point.
I'm not sure.

Though I think the whole dikk riding thing was more a broader effort by the league and advertisers to make money off Jordan.
If Magic And Bird had come into the league just a little bit later....it would have been them instead.

(though to be fair, Magic and Bird might have jump started it)

It's like everything went over your head

The sports leagues have a hand in what's put out by the networks. If they don't want something done it isn't done, NFL doesn't tolerate shyt that can damage the brand which is why you don't see as much stupidity. Baseball doesn't seem to have any issues with the way it's presented

So whose left to blame if 2/3rds of the biggest sports leagues on the planet on the same networks aren't having issues but the NBA is?

Yeah this sounds like you just saying the NBA has a control over TV but you can't actually provide evidence and we just have to believe it because....reasons.

It was an effort by David Stern,
And the NBA taking over TV marketing the game to keep pace with Nike, who were far ahead spreading the beauty of basketball on the international stage.

The NBA put themselves in a position where dikk riding players became the focus. And that comes with the flaw because players retire… Teams don’t. If it wasn’t evidenced by the drop in viewership when Jordan first retired in 1993 then I don’t know what to tell you guys. I’ve only been saying this shyt for a QUATER CENTURY that it was a recipe for future failure. That future is here now and folks are acting brand fukking new.

You don't have to do anything idc what you do lol

You made the thread asking about bullshyt and I answered. If you believe leagues are signing billion dollar deals and don't retain control over programming, when the networks are fighting over each other for the TV rights I don't think I'll lose sleep

Just don't come on here shocked making threads about ESPN suspending somebody because somebody said something the NFL didn't like again. The leagues don't have control over the networks, nope

David Stern would not allow Shaq to disrespect the MVP Nikola Jokic during his MVP Announcement. Adam Silver wants to be Buddy Buddy with his player while they need a Commish who will fight for their respect.
