Why is layering multiple samples together so uncommon these days?

Tri State Area
Well first off all, because that shyt is hard. You have to have an ear for it, and even then it can be time consuming. Secondly, the game has evolved to where that sound is not appreciated on a mainstream level. Basically, nikkas don't give a fukk about the craftsmanship of producers.

As well, the current sound that is hot is not sample based music. It's the digital/ original beat sound. That digging in the crates era is over. Maybe it will come back around, but If it does, it won't be anytime soon. I would love that because I'm a sample based producer, but this is not the right era for us:mjcry: I'm more of a hobbyist than anything because trying to make a decent amount of money with a sampled based style in this era really difficult. As Jay said, I do it for the culture.

A few months ago, I played a nikka some beats in Atlanta and he asked me if I could replay the samples because he didn't want to get sued:heh: I was like, nobody knows who the fukk you are, you trying to put some shyt on Dat Piff. He told me he wanted to be safe in case radio picked up a song:mjlol: I told him to worry about them problems if they come, because they are good problems for an unknown artist, but yeah thats the mind frame of a lot of cats.

It's still a lane for the layering samples style, but it's become more niche.
Exactly..Nobody Cares About Your Datpiff Mixtape With 33 Downloads Lol..But If You Get Sued Then You're Doing Something Right..I'd Much Rather Get Hot Then Get Sued..Look At The Drake Situation With Best I Ever Had..Yea He Doesn't Get Publishing Or Any Money When They Play It In Commercials Or Movies But That Song Sparked His Career..I'd Take That Any Day
Keep Sampling Brehs :myman:

even if you replayed them you can still be sued check robin thicke, labels don't play they want theirs too
yes you can, but if you replay the sample, all you have to do is negotiate with the artist himself, who holds the intellectuel property of the composition. if you use a sample, you also have to negotiate with the label, which holds the rights to the recording. so replaying the sample can be cheaper and less of a hassle than sampling.

As a sidenote... Someone needs to start keeping them snitches in check on whosampled :damn:
it's all part of the game. you can't use an uncleared sample and expect to get away with it in 2015 :manny:

on the other hand, just blaze and 9th wonder said in that interview with the red bull music academy, that clearing samples has become easier. they said that by now, most of the time you negotiate with the artists estate, which is often run by his children, who grew up on hiphop and understand the artform as well as the fact that sampling keeps the music they own relevant.

Pete Rock was the king of this. Soul Survivor and Petestrumentals was the apex of that sound. Then he stopped cold turkey after he started messing with the MPC, now his beats sound very flat and looped
he hasnt stopped doing this he just started using smaller pieces and different filtering, so they sound more like instruments than samples
it made everything more subtle but its still there

you can really hear it on petestrumentals 2 it sounds like he could playing a lot of it but that shyt is samples

because people don't use analog, and filtered basslines are best with the SP 1200 half plug trick

no, i think adding your own melodies is just as hard as trying to mix 3 samples.
i disagree, but if you mix 3 samples that doesn't restrict you from adding your own melodies anyways. still weak to sample the same part of the song cause 1. of course its gonna layer well cause like you said its the same key and 2. all the instruments and melodies are already made to sound good on a track together

i mean theres gotta be some instances where it's good enough to be excused but for the most part if i hear a producer sampled two parts of the same song on the track, especially if they try to make one part the main beat and the other part the chorus without even layering shyt (not accusin u of that or nothin), just makes me respect that shyt a lot less. if you wanna show your talent in sampling, and you aren't someone like jaydee who could find the best possible loop out of any given record, you gotta be layering shyt and it better not be the same damn song

thats just my 2 cents tho i dont make the rules
