To be honest, platonic male love (male friendships) were prized over spousal love in most societies. You can see small vestiges of it today when you hear men say that outside of sex with their women, they would rather be with their boys.
There are a number of studies and books that have been written on this. But essentially, modern western culture turned the tide, where men started to place priority in their spousal relationships over all other relationships. And because of this, more men are lonely in adulthood because they forewent nurturing male friendships for spending all their time with their spouse. Judeo-Christian values probably had something to do with this.
But visiting other cultures, like in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, cultures where patriarchy is still the rule of the day, you will still find male friendships put on a pedestal over spousal relationships.
Greeks and Romans took it to a whole other level though by adding a sexual component.
And society is inching closer and closer back to their standards.
