Why don’t rappers let the listener know what year it is anymore?

Back in the day rappers would shout out the upcoming year, not even the year they’re in :heh:

*Recording song September 23rd 1995*

*”We keeping it real in the NINE SIX”*
:russ:

"I kick that '98 shyt" - Prodigy, in 1996.

It's 2022 now, and judgin' on the deal I struck in 2021, I probably won't need a new advance" - Tory Lanez

I remember Nas saying Large Pro told him not to date the music like that.

Also these years don't sound as good as Nine-Three and all that.
Yeah I noticed the 90s was really the only decade people said the years, not even the 80s. I think it might've been a Y2K, "new millenium is coming" deal. The number 9 just has that finality to it that makes it cooler to say.

Well, there's no guarantee....

Imagine recording a record in late 2022 shouting out 2023 (record release year).....Then getting killed before 2023?

You not supposed to date your music..I hate playing some crazy fab or max b mixtape and the dj say “07 shyt!” “09 shyt!” just reminds you it’s old as fukk..still good music but would be even better if it’s not dated
I noticed this too. A lot of artists stay away from making album cuts that date their music or have too many current events because it takes away from the song potentially being timeless.
