But that's still relatively new. They shelved their first gay character, even after Northstar was still running around Marvel, nothing when Typhoid Mary kissed Elektra on screen and they had Smallville on air, when Marvel has the full press roll-out for Wiccan & Hulkling...and Batwoman was like a year later. Rictor & Shatterstar kissed on panel...it made some noise while DC was still doing nothing along those regards.
What they do now is different, because these are different times...and once again, they have the headstart with the studio, but they seemed to let Marvel (and others) test the waters first. More recently they've embraced it - Renee Montoya, Batwoman, Harley/Ivy but prior to that, they were still running from 50+ years of Batman/Robin jokes.
I think that's probably my main gripe with DC. Initially they did their own thing, their characters were who they were, their world was what it was, and had it's own rules. But over the past 15+ years, they've been heavily copying everyone else. They turned Harley into Deadpool-lite, when she was a character before Wade became what he became.
