My experience with Canadians is what gives me insight into whether Drake is acting. If you don't know how Canadians talk, what slang they use, etc then you could just as well assume anything about them. You can't know whether they are acting because you do not have a base from which to make assumptions.

I know exactly what code-switching means, and Drake no more code switches than Azalea. Drake has a Canadian accent and he puts on his Southern accent for hip hop interactions. Similarly, Azalea has an Australian accent and she puts on her Southern accent for hip hop interactions. It's all deceit in the end.

I heard Drake talk a few years ago with a Jewish radio station and he sounded Canadian. He didn't sound Southern at all. He even played hockey. I've met legions of Canadians and none of them talk with a Southern inflection or use slang that isn't theirs.

Barrowman was born in Scotland, came to the US, has an American accent, but sometimes when he gets around 'his people' the Glaswegian comes out. So Drake, being authentically half black/half American, can adopt the American accent when he gets around 'his people' or the Canadian accent when he gets around his mama's people.

I think Drake just said such to help his image. He sounded as Canadian as any Canadian when he gave the Jewish interview. If his accent had any Southern I would have picked up on it. Drake wasn't born in the US like Barrowman was born in Scotland so the analogy between the two is invalid. Also, you can't "adopt" accents like you can't "adopt" languages. There is no difference between Drake's playacting and Azalea's. They both do the accent and behavior switch for the same career reasons.
